I forget where, (I believe in the species guide that came on halo 3 collectors edition) that the brutes were driven to near extinction by the war. So the chances are low.

They were driven to near extinction with the war against the Sanheili. To end the fight, they resettled the Jiralhenae to resource rich planets, although the Brutes couldn't use them because they had no idea how.
