Well you see the original storyline got scrapped (it was much longer) as well as vanguard, crucible and 3 factions originally 5 all had a story line but that was cut, that's why they say odd things sometimes. Oh and the original story supposedly had to do with that the traveler was actually evil and so was the speaker. I highly doubt that we'll ever find out what that was about. Now could they change and make an amazing story in destiny 2? Absolutely if they apply themselves and don't half ass it. Honestly if destiny wants this alleged 10 year plan to not fail and be successful they need to make a lot of changes and straighten up.

I feel like right now Bungie is hiding the story (like they did halo at first) and you had to find the terminals and read the books to understand more. Maybe they focus having the game mainly for people to just play and if they want to look deeper in they can read the grimoire cards.

The terminals weren't a thing until Halo 3. Which was a really long time after Halo CE, true... And there were a lot of books... But people were excited for a Bungie game because of Halo, right? We were excited for the Bungie, and Bungie storytelling of Halo once we knew the story. I don't expect them to start with a bunch of books. I do expect them to deliver on why anyone would even pre order the game from a company that has never released a game solo. Nobody thought they were going to make another Halo CE equivalent. And with the way they apparently chopped up content to serve to us 15 bucks at a time... I just, I don't know. I'm losing faith fast.
