CE's legendary ending is non-canon. Johnson made it off the ring via a Pelican with a handful of other marines. They later linked up with Chief's Longsword.

Close to 800. No direct attack was planned, in part due to the lack of solid intel, and sheer overwhelming pressure that the Covenant's military was pushing on humanity, leaving UNSC forces stretched thin. Offensive operations were definitely conducted, but none of that magnitude. The closest one was Operation: RED FLAG which was scuttled when the Covenant made their presence known in the Epsilon Eridani system on August 30th.

True, but macing a covenant world would have given those bastards something to think about. May even force the covenant to talk things out with the UNSC knowing their worlds were in danger as well. War could have ended sooner.
