Destiny DLC: A Disappointment

Reflections of a Cheesed off Guardian We were told they were listening. We thought they would learn from their mistakes. The DLC has shown us that Bungie are not listening and didn't learn from their mistakes. The ‘story’ missions took about an hour to complete. That’s peanuts! They were set for the most part in the same old places and we found ourselves fighting the same old enemies. This 'expansion' feels more like an 'event'. Chill out! What's the problem? This game lacks content, variety, and volume. It feels empty. Don’t get me wrong, the shooting and graphics are awesome. But the lack of content and variety within this game make the grind unbearable. I enjoy RPGs. I don’t mind the grind (provided there is plenty of content), but in Destiny, the grind is a miserably, depressing joke. Not even Crota's scrota finds it funny. It is a hollow of a game. No wonder players began by shooting into a hole. It has the potential to be awesome but fails to deliver with the story and the variety of content. The grind would be almost bearable if they had given us 6 new PvP maps, 5 new strikes, 10 new story missions. Instead, they gave us rehashed missions in places we've already played with the odd additional space and minimal story telling. A Box of Chocolates If I buy a box of the finest chocolates, I expect the box to be full with delicious chocolate treats. When I get half a box of mouldy chocolate pieces, I'm not happy and throw a hissy fit. When I buy a video game that promises so much but gives so little, I feel cheated of my money. Bungie, where's my chocolate? Positives Okay, so perhaps I'm being a bit negative. It is not all doom and gloom. Over the past few months Bungie have added a lot of the ideas promoted by players and game reviews. The new missions, though brief and largely in the same old places, were fun to play. Killing Urzok the Hated with three other random Guardians was a barrel of laughs. And the last part of the Urn of Sacrifice quest was epic. I was hoping for more playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. Objections and Answers Objection 1: ‘Stop crying and play another game’. Answer: Look, I do love this game. The shooting and graphics are awesome. I just feel the game has failed us in so many ways with regard to story, variety and volume of content. It has so much potential but feels so empty. Also ... I have a right to voice my opinion. Google 'freedom of speech'. If you don't agree with what I say, don't just tell me to zip it, give me reasons why you think I'm wrong. Objection 2: 'You guys complain about not enough new content, but then you don't want to do the new content when provided'. Answer: The content provided is the same old grind, killing the same old enemies, in the same old places ... sure great new content. #DoubleSpeak Objection 3: 'I thought we got a fair bit of DLC for our money' (yes, people are seriously saying this). Answer: Compare the Destiny expansion with the expansions of Skyrim and Oblivion (they were huge!). Destiny has fallen short of the standard set by last gen games. Don't get me wrong, the game is good. The shooting is engaging and the graphics are beautiful. I simply expect more content to ease the monotony of the grind and make it more interesting and enjoyable. I don't get why people are opposed to the idea of more playable content. It is weird. Objection 4: ‘Quit whining and hating on Destiny’. Answer: In fact, I love this game. I want to see it get better and realise its potential. Surely you want the same? Objection 5: ‘Don’t comment till you've done the raid’. Answer: That is another can of worms. A social based game like Destiny should include within itself the in-game mechanics to encourage social activity. Where is the in-game LFG forum for making teams to do the raid? Seems like a glaring omission to me. Even so, why can’t I comment on the story missions and the strike when I've played them? Objection 6: 'It is more DLC than what CoD usually offers'. Answer: The problem is FPS CoD players don't see how empty this expansion is compared with what MMO and RPG players have come to expect from expansions. Destiny is a strange hybrid ... a jack of all trades ... Given the MMO/RPG aspects, I thought the expansion would substantially add to the game's playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. I think that this was a fair expectation. LIKE and BUMP if you agree. Thanks for all the support! Cheers Guardians! 600+ likes and a load of bumps!!

I agree with you. I have been defending Bungie for 3 months now and I finally recant. Bungie screwed up big time. I think I'm actually going to quit playing for a while. Who am I kidding? I quit playing today. ='(

      • I don't know man. I agree the story missions were a bit short, but I enjoyed playing them. Haven't played the new MM maps or the raid, but I've heard they're good. Sometimes when I have extra money and want to treat myself, I'll try a new beer (usually a 6-pack) that is more expensive than the others. Sometimes it's amazing and I'll come back to get it again sometime. Other times, its not what I expected. I don't get it again and I'll remind myself to read reviews before I go out and buy it just because I enjoy other flavors they've made. For some, the DLC was smooth, flavorful and enjoyable. For others, it was bitter, seemed stale, or wasn't worth the extra money. Beer and games are hit and miss. Stay thirsty, my friend.

            • if bungie doesnt listen to us, maybe they will listen to the reviews, they are coming out. tdb is getting hammered for same reasons we listed. sucks cause destiny made a buttload of money but bungies bonuses are tied to reviews. no doubt a lot of the choppinh/locking/lacking of content comes from activision, along with pricing and those are the main complaints.

              • I think you missed the fact that neither skyrim or oblivion were online games. You can't play with your friends, the graphics were crap, and there were so many glitches that if you weren't careful the story became unplayable. After the release of both skyrim and oblivion the people had time afterwards to create the new DLC. Now however they are constantly adding things there for there is less time for big DLC releases. However they have also promised more stuff to be released in the coming weeks. And yes yo have your right to freedom of speak, but please try to remember that everyone commenting on your post also has that right.

                • Well you know... this "expansion" was actually already part of the game before release. It was most likely dialed back to squeeze more money from addicted gamers like us.

I think they were kinda listening. Remember that they were already working on the content (not the mission maps, those were done) for the dark below at launch. So they probably couldn't take everything into account. I'm not going to say that the game isn't a hollow shell, it is definitely lacking. But consider this. Most DLC is pretty paltry. I haven't played the Skyrim DLC, but I did buy all the DLC for fallout 3/NV and Mass Effect 3. Each one was $10 and added about 2-4 hours of content. People pay $20 for a handful of new PVP maps. In Destiny we got new strikes, a new raid, new gear and new PVP maps. Each one of those was probably worth $5 each by that standard. So the price was on point for fps DLC. I think we are just expecting too much from an online fps aimed at teens with short attention spans. I mean, the dissenters are loud and it seems like there are a lot of them, but it's maybe a few thousand people complaining on the forums vs a few million people playing the game regularly. Anyway, back to my point. I think they are listening, sort of. I will continue to be pessimistic, but I hope we will get more interesting stuff in the House of Wolves DLC. We are getting a lot of what PVPers are asking for, inferno mode is a big one, along with trials of Osiris. PVP content is easy to make compared to PVE though, there's no ai to program or scripting to be done. You make some maps and let people have at. I hold out more hope for the "comet" DLC, since we're running out of the "cut" content. They will be forced to make some new areas. Probably no new planets or entirely new regions, but maybe a few new areas tacked onto the existing planets. Edit: Lastly, I think they are on the right track with missions like Eris'. However, I think they are stuck with the existing bounty system and they don't have a good way to make the bounty/quests more questy. I firmly believe that legendaries are too easy to get. We should have been going into the raid in blues and getting that first tier of legendaries there. The current DLC should have added some legendaries, but also better rares. Anyway, the system in place is too smushed to have a lot of variety at the top. You pretty much have to be at least a level or two away from cap to do the current content. Though, I'm thinking too much of a system like WoW, which they avoided for whatever reason. Probably those aforementioned teens with short attention spans. I would guess that Bungie low-balled their assumptions of their player base. As such, we got the Destiny that we got.

                  • What drives me crazy, is the same people agreeing with posts like this, are the people saying that a pair of gauntlets isn't worth doing all the new bounties and stuff that Eris provides. So let me get this straight... you guys complain about not enough new content, but then you don't want to do the new content when provided... Mind boggling, I tell you. Good rewards or not, new fun content is new fun content. Play it with friends if you're not having enough fun solo. Or don't play it. But quit with the contradictions. Some of you are going to complain regardless. This game could be amazing, flawless, perfect.... people would still find something to complain about. I would hate to live with some of you, or even just know you IRL.

                      • To all the people saying stop bitching and leave. The people taking the time to bitch had high hopes for the game and are disappointed. and even though they say they wont ever buy it again, they secretly have high hopes that bungie will turn it around. They are bitching hoping bungie will listen. Maybe not in the most constructive manner, but they just want their frustrations known to bungie. If all of us left, there probably wont be a destiny 3. Those that are upset but didnt bitch? They probably left the franchise for good, and that is bad for bungie. Feed back aka bitching shows that there is still a vested interest in the game and its future. If youve ever been in the military, u know theres major problems when joe stops bitching or complaining.
