Destiny DLC: A Disappointment

Reflections of a Cheesed off Guardian We were told they were listening. We thought they would learn from their mistakes. The DLC has shown us that Bungie are not listening and didn't learn from their mistakes. The ‘story’ missions took about an hour to complete. That’s peanuts! They were set for the most part in the same old places and we found ourselves fighting the same old enemies. This 'expansion' feels more like an 'event'. Chill out! What's the problem? This game lacks content, variety, and volume. It feels empty. Don’t get me wrong, the shooting and graphics are awesome. But the lack of content and variety within this game make the grind unbearable. I enjoy RPGs. I don’t mind the grind (provided there is plenty of content), but in Destiny, the grind is a miserably, depressing joke. Not even Crota's scrota finds it funny. It is a hollow of a game. No wonder players began by shooting into a hole. It has the potential to be awesome but fails to deliver with the story and the variety of content. The grind would be almost bearable if they had given us 6 new PvP maps, 5 new strikes, 10 new story missions. Instead, they gave us rehashed missions in places we've already played with the odd additional space and minimal story telling. A Box of Chocolates If I buy a box of the finest chocolates, I expect the box to be full with delicious chocolate treats. When I get half a box of mouldy chocolate pieces, I'm not happy and throw a hissy fit. When I buy a video game that promises so much but gives so little, I feel cheated of my money. Bungie, where's my chocolate? Positives Okay, so perhaps I'm being a bit negative. It is not all doom and gloom. Over the past few months Bungie have added a lot of the ideas promoted by players and game reviews. The new missions, though brief and largely in the same old places, were fun to play. Killing Urzok the Hated with three other random Guardians was a barrel of laughs. And the last part of the Urn of Sacrifice quest was epic. I was hoping for more playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. Objections and Answers Objection 1: ‘Stop crying and play another game’. Answer: Look, I do love this game. The shooting and graphics are awesome. I just feel the game has failed us in so many ways with regard to story, variety and volume of content. It has so much potential but feels so empty. Also ... I have a right to voice my opinion. Google 'freedom of speech'. If you don't agree with what I say, don't just tell me to zip it, give me reasons why you think I'm wrong. Objection 2: 'You guys complain about not enough new content, but then you don't want to do the new content when provided'. Answer: The content provided is the same old grind, killing the same old enemies, in the same old places ... sure great new content. #DoubleSpeak Objection 3: 'I thought we got a fair bit of DLC for our money' (yes, people are seriously saying this). Answer: Compare the Destiny expansion with the expansions of Skyrim and Oblivion (they were huge!). Destiny has fallen short of the standard set by last gen games. Don't get me wrong, the game is good. The shooting is engaging and the graphics are beautiful. I simply expect more content to ease the monotony of the grind and make it more interesting and enjoyable. I don't get why people are opposed to the idea of more playable content. It is weird. Objection 4: ‘Quit whining and hating on Destiny’. Answer: In fact, I love this game. I want to see it get better and realise its potential. Surely you want the same? Objection 5: ‘Don’t comment till you've done the raid’. Answer: That is another can of worms. A social based game like Destiny should include within itself the in-game mechanics to encourage social activity. Where is the in-game LFG forum for making teams to do the raid? Seems like a glaring omission to me. Even so, why can’t I comment on the story missions and the strike when I've played them? Objection 6: 'It is more DLC than what CoD usually offers'. Answer: The problem is FPS CoD players don't see how empty this expansion is compared with what MMO and RPG players have come to expect from expansions. Destiny is a strange hybrid ... a jack of all trades ... Given the MMO/RPG aspects, I thought the expansion would substantially add to the game's playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. I think that this was a fair expectation. LIKE and BUMP if you agree. Thanks for all the support! Cheers Guardians! 600+ likes and a load of bumps!!

  • Have to agree based on what I've played of it so far. Only the last mission amounts to anything much , though like you I was pleasantly surprised at the conclusion to the urn quest (more of these please bungie, add one a month or something). Going to try the strikes today, but I really had expected a couple more story missions at least. A new patrol map area would have been nice.

    • More would have of course been more, but I'm pretty pleased with what we did get. I don't think the new pve content feels rehashed at all. It is exciting and challenging without being frustrating (compare the last fight of the urn bounty with the sword of crota fight; the latter feels very tame now). Also, comparing Destiny with Elder Scrolls doesn't feel that valid. The two franchises are pretty much polar opposites of one another.

    • Totally disagree. I have paid 15-20 for DLC in the past for just 3 MP maps. So, No.

      • Story wise its disappointing. I know they only confirmed 3 missions, but none of those missions contain any story developments besides "the radio voice updates of the situation from Eris", its just the same old: Go here, kill this enemy/s, get this, come back. No cutscenes or character interaction outside the tower at all to tell the story. Eris does talk alot which was always interesting when interacting with her, but there should have been more to it on the story front. Gameplay wise I did enjoy the bounties, and I would hope the Queens Wrath also follows suit becuase Eris bounties and quest are pretty interesting. The Raid is alot of fun as well, new mechanics to get through as teams, thralls everywhere and Crota is way more enjoyable fight then Atheon. I do however agree that the amount of content included in this expansion is little. The Raid is seemingly the only beefy portion, as alot of the game already uses areas we've been to multiple times. There are multiplayer maps, but lets be real here, the games main stay is PVE; not much thought was put into the Crucible since you earn reptuation alot more frequently and to a better degree by doing PVE strikes and patrols and you get better loot/engrams as well - especially when you compare Strikes to the Crucible. To make matters worse, the VoG raid drops aren't updated to match the expansions, little to no point doing that unless you need shards. I would hope after seeing the reaction from its consumers (not just bnet but other places like RT's patch or Kotaku for instance) that they'll realize they need to focus on the story more since the gameplay is already solid. Bungie should also get there loot system together as well, cause having to get a commendation to get one piece of gear instead of using Weekly CAPPED marks that can also be used on materials is ridiculous as well. Many of us understand Destiny's grind, but I think with this DLC it just got worse.

        • Hmm lets see.... what can i get in the real world for 20 bucks? a couple pizzas and some wings... dinner for two?... a few cans dip? the sum total of which I will eventually shit out my asshole in less than 24 hours. so yep. I like the DLC Bungie. Keep'em coming. I will buy them and keep playing each DLC far beyond 24 hours from release or until Destiny 2 comes out. Some of us in the community will keep our wallets ready and understand that quantity and quality sometimes dont mix well. well some of us that is... that have a life and income enough to easily support a game system and games. The rest will open their assholes after 24 hours and let it spew because a days salary at wendy's is way to much to pay for this latest release. In all seriousness. I do hope that Bungie stays on course. Think about where this franchise will be in a year or two. I am rarely one to buy a game at release. This one I did though and honestly I am having trouble keeping up with all you bad asses. I love the game even if its a little repetitive. I still believe that in time, perhaps short time, maybe some newer content will unfold. Bungie has a lot to expand on so I'll be optimistic. “Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” ― Aristotle yeah Aristotle my bitches. Aristotle.

          • Bungie has to make new content and not to replace the old one. Stop rehashing areas. Make an effort pls. I like the game alot even if it is far from what we where promised. Don't think that bungie can change a lot in destiny. My hope for what it's worth is destiny 2 or some sort of overhaul of game with TONS of content. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me.

          • This game is exceedingly boring because the entirety of it is trekking from point-A to point-B in a linear sandbox, and it's obvious. GTA5, for example, feels big and open. They use as much of the landscape when they're able to and it WORKS! With Destiny it's: Enter room and stuff, enter next room and kill stuff, have Dinklebot open door while you kill stuff, etc. "Doors are the secret to Destiny, and opening them is what makes this game successful," said every developer at Bungie.

          • I think that the Story was MUCH better than the base one, but I'm very disappointed that Bungie gave PS ANOTHER exclusive strike, and it looks like such a fun strike! No Land Beyond SUCKS, and the new Vanguard weapons are a big letdown. I hope Bungie doesn't give PS another exclusive strike for House of Wolves, and the weapons are better. Disappointed other than the story.

            • I've been following the game since E3 2013. From the news and marketing the game was advertised as a RPGFPS with MMO elements. Instead, we got the next COD.

            • The upped level cap is the worst part. "Hey guys, check out our new expansion! You can go up a whole 2 levels!" REALLY? Most level cap increases for rpgs go up at least a whole ten levels. Bungie is milking this for all it's worth and they know and they don't care. Activision has already paid them off.

I'm sorry, but Hearthfire was huge? Dragonborn and Dawnguard both lasted me an evening, and after which there was really nothing else left for me to do. As for the Dark Below, I've done the main story content already, as it was short and easy. It was finished in an hour or two, like you said; but I still haven't finished Crota's End and I still haven't seen all the new PvP maps. I'm a few hardcore days in and I still feel like there's lots I need to do. I guess what it comes down to is whether or not you feel that repetitive content is content at all. I do, and you don't. I respect your opinion, but know that Bungie didn't let all of us down. Edited grammar mistakes.
