Destiny DLC: A Disappointment

Reflections of a Cheesed off Guardian We were told they were listening. We thought they would learn from their mistakes. The DLC has shown us that Bungie are not listening and didn't learn from their mistakes. The ‘story’ missions took about an hour to complete. That’s peanuts! They were set for the most part in the same old places and we found ourselves fighting the same old enemies. This 'expansion' feels more like an 'event'. Chill out! What's the problem? This game lacks content, variety, and volume. It feels empty. Don’t get me wrong, the shooting and graphics are awesome. But the lack of content and variety within this game make the grind unbearable. I enjoy RPGs. I don’t mind the grind (provided there is plenty of content), but in Destiny, the grind is a miserably, depressing joke. Not even Crota's scrota finds it funny. It is a hollow of a game. No wonder players began by shooting into a hole. It has the potential to be awesome but fails to deliver with the story and the variety of content. The grind would be almost bearable if they had given us 6 new PvP maps, 5 new strikes, 10 new story missions. Instead, they gave us rehashed missions in places we've already played with the odd additional space and minimal story telling. A Box of Chocolates If I buy a box of the finest chocolates, I expect the box to be full with delicious chocolate treats. When I get half a box of mouldy chocolate pieces, I'm not happy and throw a hissy fit. When I buy a video game that promises so much but gives so little, I feel cheated of my money. Bungie, where's my chocolate? Positives Okay, so perhaps I'm being a bit negative. It is not all doom and gloom. Over the past few months Bungie have added a lot of the ideas promoted by players and game reviews. The new missions, though brief and largely in the same old places, were fun to play. Killing Urzok the Hated with three other random Guardians was a barrel of laughs. And the last part of the Urn of Sacrifice quest was epic. I was hoping for more playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. Objections and Answers Objection 1: ‘Stop crying and play another game’. Answer: Look, I do love this game. The shooting and graphics are awesome. I just feel the game has failed us in so many ways with regard to story, variety and volume of content. It has so much potential but feels so empty. Also ... I have a right to voice my opinion. Google 'freedom of speech'. If you don't agree with what I say, don't just tell me to zip it, give me reasons why you think I'm wrong. Objection 2: 'You guys complain about not enough new content, but then you don't want to do the new content when provided'. Answer: The content provided is the same old grind, killing the same old enemies, in the same old places ... sure great new content. #DoubleSpeak Objection 3: 'I thought we got a fair bit of DLC for our money' (yes, people are seriously saying this). Answer: Compare the Destiny expansion with the expansions of Skyrim and Oblivion (they were huge!). Destiny has fallen short of the standard set by last gen games. Don't get me wrong, the game is good. The shooting is engaging and the graphics are beautiful. I simply expect more content to ease the monotony of the grind and make it more interesting and enjoyable. I don't get why people are opposed to the idea of more playable content. It is weird. Objection 4: ‘Quit whining and hating on Destiny’. Answer: In fact, I love this game. I want to see it get better and realise its potential. Surely you want the same? Objection 5: ‘Don’t comment till you've done the raid’. Answer: That is another can of worms. A social based game like Destiny should include within itself the in-game mechanics to encourage social activity. Where is the in-game LFG forum for making teams to do the raid? Seems like a glaring omission to me. Even so, why can’t I comment on the story missions and the strike when I've played them? Objection 6: 'It is more DLC than what CoD usually offers'. Answer: The problem is FPS CoD players don't see how empty this expansion is compared with what MMO and RPG players have come to expect from expansions. Destiny is a strange hybrid ... a jack of all trades ... Given the MMO/RPG aspects, I thought the expansion would substantially add to the game's playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. I think that this was a fair expectation. LIKE and BUMP if you agree. Thanks for all the support! Cheers Guardians! 600+ likes and a load of bumps!!

I've seen Halo being used against Destiny all the time so I'm gonna just go ahead and throw this out there; Halo DLC: 3 new maps for Matchmaking. That's it. No new campaign. No new guns. No new anything (besides the maps, obviously). But I do agree. I've done one mission (in the past 3 weeks) and I didn't really feel compelled to keep going. There wasn't really a mystery. I mean, for the fact to actually complete the storyline of The Dark Below, I have to find a moment in time to randomly find people on the forums (that REQUIRE A MIC EVEN THOUGH NO ONE ACTUALLY AND TRULY COMMUNICATES LIKE THE SO-CALLED TEAM WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE) that I've never met just to hopefully not have them quit so I can complete it; and the ending isn't even an ending.

  • Totally agreed, really like this game and think it has ridiculous amounts of potential, however that is the problem.. I know what it could be. I was really looking for the DLC to save it for me but its worn dry on me already.. i dont have that pull to play it like when i started playing.. regardless ill still play but nowhere near as much

  • You definitely have the right to voice your opinion. What I don't understand is why would someone choose to continue to splurge hours upon hours into a game that lacks literally everything you find essential to a video game? Why do you love a failing game as much as you do? If the game lacks the content and the variety you are desperately longing for, what about it makes you keep coming back? If you can have these opinions about this game yet you still play it, you are living proof doesn't need ANY of the things you say it lacks, my friend.

    • I don't understand threads like this. There is ALWAYS something to do. For me, I'll probably stop gaming hard when I hit 32, and fully upgraded all my new DLC weapons and then just wait for the Hard Raid to drop. Yes, I wish there was more content, but how can you moan when you've barely achieved anything with the current content?

    • I was on the fence I delt with the pre dlc game and put 600 hours in. The dlc kinda killed the game for me. The dlc is boring and I don't feel like grinding anymore. I don't like the economy and the raid just dosnt do anything for me. It just feels like a reset of the whole game. And it honestly turned me off. I wanted my work to mean something in game and it was all taken from me. But in fairness I seen it coming

    • Nice post and I agree. I'm a comitted player and enjoy Bungies work, but man oh, man. This DLC is not worth it. I've put a lot of hours into it but seeing me not able to continue just makes me think, I've wasted my hours. Like I said I'm committed and so, I bought the DLC and so far it's been bit poor. Missions are crap, Crota Ending is fun as hell but difficult if you dont have the team to finish the ending like I do, Weapons that cant exceed 300 have to be reset which is a complete joke.

    • I'd like to add that the Urn of Sacrifice Quest adds a decent chunk of things to do, in a fun and challenging way, with a decent, legendary reward at the end. And looking at the connection with Xur, it might be possible they will offer a quest leading up to the Urn (hopefully a "new" quest not the same one we already did), and then the Urn every week. You'd have the week to get the Urn, Xur-Time to fill it. And if they couple that with different quest steps and requirements, plus rotating legendary rewards, that would be quite nice. Not that it's sure, but there is a bit more to the DLC than met the eye on release day.

I've frankly given up. I'll log on a few more times to re-upgrade my icebreaker and suros that I had put a lot of time into maxing out (because I enjoyed using those weapons a lot) but once that's it I'm done. And when I say done, I mean no longer going to pay for any Bungie product moving forward. Not unless it is free or extremely cheap. I've just done hoping Deej's broken record cries of "we're listening" lead somewhere actually worthwhile. I'm done listening to people say "just wait until the DLC, things will get better". I mean hell Bungie, $20 is a lot for a DLC. $15 was expensive for 90% of DLC on the market and those pieces of content were far more substantial. I've bought every single halo DLC (and Marathon DLC) Bungie has ever made since it was always quality content but this time I just can't. No design decision in this game has been made with the players in mind, they have all been business oriented and every one of them calculated to increase the amount of money being made and it sickens me. This is the company that at one point gave away DLC for free (cold storage map on Bungie Day) and also made map packs free like a month later (this was during Halo 2). Map packs, mind you, that were about $12. Want a better story that challenges your intellect and feels like an immersive cohesive universe? Nope, the 8-14 demographic won't understand most of it so we have to dumb it down to "go here, shoot that until it dies, congrats you saved the universe and now have all the hot babes". Sure a large vocal part of your community that would be members of this forum and other websites will tear the game apart, but they're still playing it and the game's accessibility means more sales. Lack of content and low initial level cap? How about caps forcing players to spend far longer in the game to accomplish simple things than they would otherwise spend. We'll let players have just enough glimmer as to have just enough to make a few large purchases. We'll have a "reputation" system which takes thousands of points to increase a level even though any activity the person can do will only increment the reputation like 1/100 of the way there. Also there will be marks that also have a cap insuring it takes 2 weeks to actually buy a piece of armor or weapon since you can't have enough for both. We will RNG every single thing making it impossible for players to set goals in certain timetables forcing them to keep pulling that slot machine lever because Casino logic never fails to pay the bills. Multiple paths to reach level cap allowing players to "complete" the game? Nah, F 'em. Limit it to a single path which requires 1 aspect of the game be played a potentially infinite amount of times because everybody loves RNG rewards that could easily be programmed to remember what you got last time reducing the likelihood of being given the same reward again the next week but then players would "complete" their playthroughs quicker which reduces the numbers of people playing the game which doesn't look good when we do our marketing pitches to journalists. Worried your playerbase will go through the DLC too quick and stop playing the game? Take the exotic weapons you kept promising people you'd make better and instead of adding unique, interesting buffs to them or simply upping their attack power, let's make players have to trade in their old now obsolete exotics for the exact same version that just features a higher attack value but also let's reset their weapon progress. This has the added benefit of further padding out gameplay by making people grind out those traded in weapons again, plus padding out the amount of time it takes people to even trade in everything they want since the system is tied to Xur who is only available for essentially 2 days. Thus locking in players who have many exotics into another RNG system which could take months to replace everything a person wants to change. These tactics are so transparently obvious I'm having a hard time wondering if Bungie actually developed the DLC or if Activision just straight up developed the DLC from their marketing department. What if players won't buy the DLC? Shove it in their face by making the DLC content a honking green "alert" like UI icon and then make the weekly content locked behind the paywall as well killing off an essential source of strange coins and upgrade material for people who didn't buy the DLC but want to move past level 29/30. Could they have created a separate "weekly" content specific to people who bought the DLC? Yeah, just like there will be DLC specific PvP playlists. But then you sell less DLC by not pissing people off by locking away content they need. Even something as minor as the new tumbler sparrow shows how every decision is business oriented. A sizeable portion of your community sad that sparrow racing isn't a thing? Create a special trick sparrow and then dangle in front of people's faces like a carrot on a stick and put it behind the paywall as well. Something that easily would have been a free gift in pass incarnations of Bungie. I can't trust anything DeeJ says since every "we're listening" ends up with a compromise of sort of involving something the community asked for while still mostly being about padding out game length (which in a game with so little content is more torture than helpful) and increasing sales potential. I'm done.

After play ffxi and ffxiv, I can't never farm by going cave to cave opening chest for low lv items lol so sad. Gonna trade destiny in for gta.

                • It's been said before but I'll emphasize. COD $15 for: -3 PVP maps -possibly some new guns/a perk or two Vs Destiny $15 for: -3 PVP maps -new PVP game types (incoming) -3 story missions + extra bounties/bounty missions -new armor and weapons -A new RAID (which is amazing! Just got to Crota last night and it was a hell of a time) Yea, compared to my past DLC purchases, I'd say I got my money's worth. I've found that most people that are claiming that the DLC is terrible don't play the Crucible AND don't raid. So they're complaining because they decide not to participate in half the new content... which is absolutely ridiculous. I agree that this game needs more story but most people don't take into account that bungie is splitting their efforts in half to attempt to make both a great PVE and PVP experience. This was possibly the wrong move depending on which crowd you're aiming to please (which is incredibly apparent with all the RPG nerds who are crying for a better story line) but for someone like me who thoroughly enjoys both - they hit the mark. I'm not necessarily trying to defend Bungie here ... I'm just stating that I am happy with my purchase and I'll keep playing because I'm enjoying myself. I highly encourage you to move on if you're not enjoying the game as there is absolute NO POINT in playing a video game if you're not having fun.
I'm one of those "RPG nerds" so there's no reason for anyone to get offended
• Well said. I really enjoy the gameplay but it is really, really repetitive. Why no variety? Answer: variety takes time and Destiny clearly had to start making cash so it got fired out as it was rather that how it should have been. It's weak as hell but it's good fun. So people play and enjoy it but even compared to last gen titles it is barren. I would have some respect for Bungievision if they dropped a batch of new story missions before the HoW DLC is released, but that's not going to happen. Clearly they are going to milk this for all it is worth and fair play, there are people who seem to love it so why not. Enjoy, but some of us have been left feeling empty by the bull fed to us. Bungie should take a good look at GTA V as a great example of how to deal with fans. GTA online has more variety than Destiny and that was a bolt on to the massive single player activities. Plus a ton of free DLC. Seriously, do people not realise?

                    • I wouldn't call the dlc an expansion (though it fits the theme of what destiny was going for). But I think the dlc is great. I don't get why people thought this dlc was going to be massively different then what we already have. Dlc is always more of the same. We got more story. About the hive. Through item descriptions, Eris, and grimiore cards. I'm not going to get into how they could have executed the story better. My point is we did learn more and the content actually plays apart of the current world instead of feeling like an off shoot a uh...side story if you will. Yes the characters could use more depth. Yes the info on the cards should be in the game. But at least for this first game the story isn't spoon fed. We are left hints and have to look for details and come up with our own stories. That's not going to be fixed or changed in dlc. It's really simple. If you enjoy destiny as is buy the dlc. If you aren't the dlc won't change anything for you. So don't get it.

You obviously enjoy the game, and admire a lot about it, but aren't afraid to call it like it is when it comes to the shameful lack of content and repetition. Keep making posts like this. Tell everyone you know about this issue. Make sure nobody ever forgets just how underhanded Activision's marketing was.
