Destiny DLC: A Disappointment

Reflections of a Cheesed off Guardian We were told they were listening. We thought they would learn from their mistakes. The DLC has shown us that Bungie are not listening and didn't learn from their mistakes. The ‘story’ missions took about an hour to complete. That’s peanuts! They were set for the most part in the same old places and we found ourselves fighting the same old enemies. This 'expansion' feels more like an 'event'. Chill out! What's the problem? This game lacks content, variety, and volume. It feels empty. Don’t get me wrong, the shooting and graphics are awesome. But the lack of content and variety within this game make the grind unbearable. I enjoy RPGs. I don’t mind the grind (provided there is plenty of content), but in Destiny, the grind is a miserably, depressing joke. Not even Crota's scrota finds it funny. It is a hollow of a game. No wonder players began by shooting into a hole. It has the potential to be awesome but fails to deliver with the story and the variety of content. The grind would be almost bearable if they had given us 6 new PvP maps, 5 new strikes, 10 new story missions. Instead, they gave us rehashed missions in places we've already played with the odd additional space and minimal story telling. A Box of Chocolates If I buy a box of the finest chocolates, I expect the box to be full with delicious chocolate treats. When I get half a box of mouldy chocolate pieces, I'm not happy and throw a hissy fit. When I buy a video game that promises so much but gives so little, I feel cheated of my money. Bungie, where's my chocolate? Positives Okay, so perhaps I'm being a bit negative. It is not all doom and gloom. Over the past few months Bungie have added a lot of the ideas promoted by players and game reviews. The new missions, though brief and largely in the same old places, were fun to play. Killing Urzok the Hated with three other random Guardians was a barrel of laughs. And the last part of the Urn of Sacrifice quest was epic. I was hoping for more playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. Objections and Answers Objection 1: ‘Stop crying and play another game’. Answer: Look, I do love this game. The shooting and graphics are awesome. I just feel the game has failed us in so many ways with regard to story, variety and volume of content. It has so much potential but feels so empty. Also ... I have a right to voice my opinion. Google 'freedom of speech'. If you don't agree with what I say, don't just tell me to zip it, give me reasons why you think I'm wrong. Objection 2: 'You guys complain about not enough new content, but then you don't want to do the new content when provided'. Answer: The content provided is the same old grind, killing the same old enemies, in the same old places ... sure great new content. #DoubleSpeak Objection 3: 'I thought we got a fair bit of DLC for our money' (yes, people are seriously saying this). Answer: Compare the Destiny expansion with the expansions of Skyrim and Oblivion (they were huge!). Destiny has fallen short of the standard set by last gen games. Don't get me wrong, the game is good. The shooting is engaging and the graphics are beautiful. I simply expect more content to ease the monotony of the grind and make it more interesting and enjoyable. I don't get why people are opposed to the idea of more playable content. It is weird. Objection 4: ‘Quit whining and hating on Destiny’. Answer: In fact, I love this game. I want to see it get better and realise its potential. Surely you want the same? Objection 5: ‘Don’t comment till you've done the raid’. Answer: That is another can of worms. A social based game like Destiny should include within itself the in-game mechanics to encourage social activity. Where is the in-game LFG forum for making teams to do the raid? Seems like a glaring omission to me. Even so, why can’t I comment on the story missions and the strike when I've played them? Objection 6: 'It is more DLC than what CoD usually offers'. Answer: The problem is FPS CoD players don't see how empty this expansion is compared with what MMO and RPG players have come to expect from expansions. Destiny is a strange hybrid ... a jack of all trades ... Given the MMO/RPG aspects, I thought the expansion would substantially add to the game's playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. I think that this was a fair expectation. LIKE and BUMP if you agree. Thanks for all the support! Cheers Guardians! 600+ likes and a load of bumps!!

  • Bump, I agree, this game has less of a story line than dark souls and dark souls 2. At least those two games made up for it in other parts of the game.

    • You're progress in the current destiny will transfer to destiny 2, and the grind is bearable. There is a lot to do , rank up crucible/vanguard, farming, ranking up the factions, trying to get every exotic, and much more. you just don't have the patience of playing through content that you seem to find worthless.

      • Personally, I can get past most of these points... Before I continue, I should also mention that i'm somewhere between a casual and hardcore gamer, I've put 49 hours into destiny for reference. The game expands, Bungie spends a lot of money developing and supporting the game, and we should be thankful for no subscription service that i'll bet was considered to further push it towards an "MMO" I'll buy it, and i'll enjoy it. I don't really care if its recycled content or whatever everyone is complaining about. It's ultimately content that you have to pay to access, this is the nature of expansions/DLC. You are tempted into buying the content by being able to see what you are missing (hence the weekly/daily missions being limited to DLC owners). I will agree however that it is expensive; $20 for any "expansion" is expensive and thus will generate a high expectation which for many gamers, it unfortunately does not meet. This is likely in line with other MMO's pricing for their expansions, however Destiny's is marginally cheaper (likely as it isn't an MMO and Bungie are almost capitalising on this). The one thing that angered me however is the fact its £20 (GBP) for me. $20 does NOT equal £20. £20 is closer to $30. I'm not entirely sure who is in charge of the pricing (Sony or Bungie) but they need to be shot, and it worries me as it's almost a "test of the water" - I fear more games and DLC's will follow suit and just match the $ price. Nevertheless, people should just try and enjoy the game rather than ranting. But of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and when people aren't happy, they like to voice it.

        • I remember paying 10 euros for a couple of PvP maps in Halo. Now it's 15 euros, for much more... What's wrong?

          • I really enjoyed Destiny but Im so glad I didnt buy the dlc. I bought Metro redux brand new and it was £1.15 cheaper. It sound like hardly any content for £20.

I will say something that is an undeniable fact. This is not something you can say no to or 'i disagree'. Every single person who've purchased the DLC and is perfectly okay with it comes directly from Call of Duty (where you're used to being milked the f8ck up) or a simple minded person who never in his life tried to get things better than garbage he/she 'may' receive. This is not a 'i don't agree', this is you in couple of sentences.

            • Worst thing is they gave us a raid that replaces VoG instead of an extra one. I just ran VoG on hard, I wasn't expecting any of the new exotics to drop, but at least the updated versions of the old exotics. Now there's absolutely no point in doing VoG anymore in preparation for the upcoming hard version of Crota's End. Please Bungie, update VoG to keep it at least a little interesting. Just add radiant shards/energy and updated exotics to the loottable!

                • I understand the game needs progression, and it a common practice in mmo's, but... I feel like I wasted my time. I worked hard just to max my raid weapons/armor, and now they're garbage. What was the point? This expansion has left me with a lot of mixed feelings. I'm overwhelmed and not having much fun anymore. Still... The raid is pretty.

                • The urn quest leads you to another quest mission like the first one which leads me to believe that there is ANOTHER story mission after that! There is a lot of stuff we don't know about yet. Gotta play the whole thing!

                • Liked and bumped. Sadly this was what I knew was coming. The moment they declared they were already working on Destiny 2 I had given up all hope for Destiny 1. It has been said and asked 1000s of times long before the DLC happend. More content. More variation. STORY? Also separate PvE from PvP. But nothing happens. At all. Scratch that. Something happens: Loyal players are being pissed off. More and more players are leaving. Dissapointed from what could have been easily THE game of the decade. But there is light on the horizon maybe Human Element can pull off what Destiny couldnt. Not great hopes for a decent story either there but at least there might be more content.

I dont even think they are the same bungie anymore, maybe they think that giving us less and taking our money is the right way to go. I dont even think they are my favorite game developers anymore :(

                        • Destiny is awesome, I thoroughly enjoy it. I blame Activision for the bread crumb trail of meager content updates. I believe that Bungie had created a complete game, then Activision stepped in and sliced it up into marketable bite-sized parts. Look at what they did to Guitar Hero and Call of Duty; release one iteration, nearly identical, every single year until the franchise is the biggest dead horse on the market, then buy up the next up-and-coming franchise to milk it to death and kick it to the curb. I'm not giving up on Destiny because I love the style, the world, the art, gameplay and gear. I do wish there was a cohesive narrative, and the game desperately needs new environments to explore and new ways to play/new features, not a retread through existing environments fighting re-skinned enemies.

                          • ya in my opinion they should have given all the new story, and strike for free and then have all the weapons, armor and the new raid for those that want the dlc. Also Im suprised that there isn't a level 26 version of this new raid only level 30. Its a little weird cuz most people that run raids are in the mid to high 20s, so a part of the next dlc they should include that.

                            • You've made some good points here man. It looks like Bungie are developing a habit of poking their userbase in the eye, either from poor communication on chamnges or lack of content. I've bought the expansion pack and in it for the long haul but I feel for anyone who has bought the standalone dlc, they've been ripped off.

The dlc has certainly "slowed" me down. I have been grinding every day with 3 characters for a while for what? All that gear was be scrapped for gear I acquired and maxed out in two days. And even that gear is not good enough to so the new hard raid. All those nightfalls, raids, dailies, weeklies and strike and I still have no G-horn or Ice Breaker. For the first time in months, I have missed dailies, weeklies and NF's this week because I am just deflated. Why grind. Just play when you can and if the drops come, they come. I have a sick amount of hours in this game and I am no better off than a friend who has played for two weeks.
