Destiny DLC: A Disappointment

Reflections of a Cheesed off Guardian We were told they were listening. We thought they would learn from their mistakes. The DLC has shown us that Bungie are not listening and didn't learn from their mistakes. The ‘story’ missions took about an hour to complete. That’s peanuts! They were set for the most part in the same old places and we found ourselves fighting the same old enemies. This 'expansion' feels more like an 'event'. Chill out! What's the problem? This game lacks content, variety, and volume. It feels empty. Don’t get me wrong, the shooting and graphics are awesome. But the lack of content and variety within this game make the grind unbearable. I enjoy RPGs. I don’t mind the grind (provided there is plenty of content), but in Destiny, the grind is a miserably, depressing joke. Not even Crota's scrota finds it funny. It is a hollow of a game. No wonder players began by shooting into a hole. It has the potential to be awesome but fails to deliver with the story and the variety of content. The grind would be almost bearable if they had given us 6 new PvP maps, 5 new strikes, 10 new story missions. Instead, they gave us rehashed missions in places we've already played with the odd additional space and minimal story telling. A Box of Chocolates If I buy a box of the finest chocolates, I expect the box to be full with delicious chocolate treats. When I get half a box of mouldy chocolate pieces, I'm not happy and throw a hissy fit. When I buy a video game that promises so much but gives so little, I feel cheated of my money. Bungie, where's my chocolate? Positives Okay, so perhaps I'm being a bit negative. It is not all doom and gloom. Over the past few months Bungie have added a lot of the ideas promoted by players and game reviews. The new missions, though brief and largely in the same old places, were fun to play. Killing Urzok the Hated with three other random Guardians was a barrel of laughs. And the last part of the Urn of Sacrifice quest was epic. I was hoping for more playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. Objections and Answers Objection 1: ‘Stop crying and play another game’. Answer: Look, I do love this game. The shooting and graphics are awesome. I just feel the game has failed us in so many ways with regard to story, variety and volume of content. It has so much potential but feels so empty. Also ... I have a right to voice my opinion. Google 'freedom of speech'. If you don't agree with what I say, don't just tell me to zip it, give me reasons why you think I'm wrong. Objection 2: 'You guys complain about not enough new content, but then you don't want to do the new content when provided'. Answer: The content provided is the same old grind, killing the same old enemies, in the same old places ... sure great new content. #DoubleSpeak Objection 3: 'I thought we got a fair bit of DLC for our money' (yes, people are seriously saying this). Answer: Compare the Destiny expansion with the expansions of Skyrim and Oblivion (they were huge!). Destiny has fallen short of the standard set by last gen games. Don't get me wrong, the game is good. The shooting is engaging and the graphics are beautiful. I simply expect more content to ease the monotony of the grind and make it more interesting and enjoyable. I don't get why people are opposed to the idea of more playable content. It is weird. Objection 4: ‘Quit whining and hating on Destiny’. Answer: In fact, I love this game. I want to see it get better and realise its potential. Surely you want the same? Objection 5: ‘Don’t comment till you've done the raid’. Answer: That is another can of worms. A social based game like Destiny should include within itself the in-game mechanics to encourage social activity. Where is the in-game LFG forum for making teams to do the raid? Seems like a glaring omission to me. Even so, why can’t I comment on the story missions and the strike when I've played them? Objection 6: 'It is more DLC than what CoD usually offers'. Answer: The problem is FPS CoD players don't see how empty this expansion is compared with what MMO and RPG players have come to expect from expansions. Destiny is a strange hybrid ... a jack of all trades ... Given the MMO/RPG aspects, I thought the expansion would substantially add to the game's playable content to make the grind more enjoyable. I think that this was a fair expectation. LIKE and BUMP if you agree. Thanks for all the support! Cheers Guardians! 600+ likes and a load of bumps!!

  • DLC was the straw that broke the camels back for me. Haven't played it at all this week don't ever plan on playing it again. Games that limit your progressing then completely reset everything you worked for... Well id like to see someone argue that it isn't just making hurdles to jump so the game last longer than a game should, they made a 50-100 hour game last 5X longer than it should. Activision written all over it people defending it you might aswel just be the COD fanboys.

    • There is one part no one is talking about. "The missions are too short,we're done already" Okay,fine...There was a mission in the Urn quest that no one had played till Friday rolled around and Xur was here. Did anyone know that would lead to a unique mission? I highly doubt it. How many more are there? There could be a good many Eris will throw out at us and we have no idea what could or is coming our way. Is this what everyone wanted? No,but a majority of the community is still playing arn't they? If you feel you wasted your money then I honestly hate that for you and there should be someway for those poeple to get some kind of redemption. But there are a alot more people enjoying than not enjoying it and at the end of the day Bungie only cares about that one number.

    • Bump! I agree to the fullest. I still play this game ALL THE TIME, I love to mess around with the EV-30 Tumbler. I just finished the Bad Juju bounty. But then I realize that I completed everything but Scrotas End in under 2 1/2 hours. Not even to add in that Within 3 days of the DLC I had already reached 31. I don't wanna grind for the Bad Juju upgrades. And I can't find a team to help with even trying the New raid because: 1. Somehow this 30/29 has already completed it. And has no Raid weapons/gear. 2. "To late I got to go to bed." 3. THEY FREAKING SUCK 4. They want to try a new "Cheese". 5. I have to grind out tigers for new vanguard armor. I am with you on this. Destiny is like the girlfriend you love and have great times with. Although after awhile she starts cheating on you. but yet you accept it and hope for it to get better. You don't know if it will, but you hope. She gives you shit tons of excuses, tells you lies. But for some reason you still love her. I have a idea bungie! Put out a free DLC. Have this include 3 New exotic bounties, that you can choose from after completing a new story line from a new planet. Have the plant be a new, never heard of one that was formed by a collision between a cargo ship carrying some weird shit and one carrying rocks from a quarry. Have there be a new enemy type. Maybe call them the Aberanthians. They are a hybrid subspecies of the Vex and Fallen. Created by a crazed, lab coat wearing, mad scientist boss. Maybe add a new subclass. Here are some ideas for those five exotic bounties. And these are what exotics should be. Not some stupid piece of shit LMG. Bounty Name: A Stab In The Dark Part 1: Kill 500 Enemies with your melee attack, death will set you back. (Kill = +1 Death = -2) Part 2: Defeat (Whatever those 3 knights names are from the Sword Of Crota mission) (it will be level 28) Part 3: Kill 500 hive using Blade swords on earth and the moon. Part 4: Buy the sword handle from Xur. Part 5: Kill (Some random mini boss that drops the blade of the sword) Part 6: Charge the sword, using the souls of knights from the moon. (Kill 100 knights) Part 7: Return to (Someone) to receive your prize. Weapon: Sword Of The Fallen Type: Heavy How It Works: Kinda like a rocket launcher. You pick up heavy ammo which it can hold 15. And it gives you that many swings. There is no reload. Bounty name: An Arrow To The Knee Part 1: Gather poly-nylon-atom strings from Aberanthian enemies. (Kill 250 Aberanthians) Part 2: Collect 150 spirit bloom Part 3: Buy the bow frame from Xur Part 4: Search chests on Venus to find the 4 spindles. Part 5: Take the components to the gunsmith to have them assembled. Weapon name: Godspeed Type: Primary How it works: Almost like a sniper. but its a bow. So it takes time for the arrow to travel. It has a slow reload but deals 2x the damage of a sniper. Bounty name: Wolfs Head Part 1: Kill 100 enemies in the crucible with handcannons. Part 2: Kill 50 enemies with precision kills from a sniper. Part 3: Kill 100 enemies will Rocket Launchers. Part 4: Buy the weapon frame from Xur. Part 5: Take the weapon to the Gunsmith to be assembled (Requires 2 Exotic shards, 7000 glimmer, and 10 of each material) Weapon name: Death trap Type: Special How it works: I am not sure. I am thinking maybe like a shotgun handcannon that causes targets to explode and has the same range as the last word? Thats all I can write for now. Probs gonna post this as its own thread too.

      • hmm. Bungie knew that most of their sales would come from launch day, or pre-orders. They got their money. Whatever they will release next ( at least the immediate 2 expansions after game's launch ) will be crap. I mean come on... they sold DLC packs WITH PRE-ORDERS!!! That was the biggest indication that this game is going to be a cash cow. I don't think Bungie is even bothered about a few players like YOU and I; that we will not stand for this, that we won't buy their DLCs because basically they keep 're-releasing' the original game in parts as so-called DLCs. Most of us who are older (started gaming during 80s) understand what really is going on here. We are not used to paying for games as subscriptions or micro transactions. We are more into " I pay you one time, and you give me the finished product". Unfortunately, this is not the trend now. If you look at any game, be it on android, pc, console, you will notice a new (quite established) trend. Pay more, to get more. This may include micro transactions, DLCs, map packs etc. The new gaming generation has grown up with this trend, hence, for them what is happening in Destiny is quite normal. If I told my father 20 years ago that you will buy a car with full price and keep paying a monthly fee to keep it in tip top shape to the dealer, he'd be pissed. Us, the older gaming generations, are facing a similar problem. The rest of the world has moved on to this subscription based system because it ensures quality, content, and more bang for the buck. So what is really wrong with Destiny? Why isn't it working? because candy crush seems to work for everyone... old, new, any generation... Maybe this will help for you younger generation of the gamers to understand why the rest of the older gamers in the community are not happy with Destiny's current model. Subscription fees : are ok, as long as you are paying them for a game that gives you new content, new expansions, new maps, etc. Think about it this way, if a game did NOT provide NEW, FRESH CONTENT, no one would pay monthly fees to keep playing that game. And Destiny's DLCs are not fresh new content. I had low expectations from the first DLC anyways (since it was clear that they withheld content from original release and now selling them as DLC) but I had faith that they would do something to tie the story-line together. But alas!... after so many posts to bungie about bringing the Grimoire cards to the console character menu, and ideas on how to make bosses more interesting, I'm really sure now that DeeJ is just an escape goat for Bungie. I don't blame the guy. In fact, I feel sorry for the gamers like us. Content: a game that is massively multi-player online based needs to have so much content that players would have to take huge amounts of hours to grind to reach end-game scenarios. There should be a balance between grind and content. Players should feel like they are grinding with a purpose. This is usually done by associating grind with reputation gifts. For example, WoW had factions that gave you rare/ultra-rare mounts, weapons, gear etc. It had quest within a quest (Shadowmourne) if you wanted to kill Litch King with a special weapon. You could do it without it, but I had spent 3 months just to be able to get that weapon. Something like this, makes raids interesting. Also not to mention your enemies. Bosses have to have charisma. Bosses need to have some sort of impact on your gaming. This, I'm sorry to say, is HORRIBLY lacking in Destiny. I do not find any difference between killing a ninja Dreg and Aetheon. I'm sorry. I didn't feel any difference in achievement after I killed Phogoth vs after I killed the band of Wizards. Phogoth might as well be a lamp with a huge luminous bulb and it would probably be more interesting. The encounter with Phogoth is not difficult because of Pho', rather because of his goons. Remember Borderlands? and it's bosses? Cheesy? yes, but didn't it leave an impression on you after you finished the game? It did on me. So at the end of the day, what does this mean? It means that a new era of gaming has come. An era where gamers will pay to get things they want. It's not about waiting and finding an epic loot in some dark corner of the game world that no has ever heard of. Just like the TV made zombies of us, telling us what to eat, what to buy, how to behave, the gaming industry is now taking control of its gamers. They are telling us what to do, how to do it, how NOT to do it (so many -blam!-ed up patches on how NOT to kill a boss). Half-life (original) did not tell you either how the claw monsters see you and attack, or what the story is, but when you meet the scientists at Earth, they tell you how you -blam!-ed up and opened a portal into another world. Destiny's story-line is so frustrating, so frustrating, so ignorant of what the players are ACTUALLY experiencing, that it doesn't even feel like I'm playing a game. It feels like I'm doing something because the Ghost told me to do so. Does anyone know why we went into the Vault of Glass? And what we accomplished after defeating Aetheon? Anyone? -blam!- that! Can someone tell us why it is called the Vault of Glass? Why not Vault of LootsWhichYouMayGetWhenYouOpenBoxes? There is only one explanation on why the Vex are fighting other enemy factions, it's because, and I quote, "... an evils so dark that it despises other evils". Really robot girl? that's it? No explanation on why they only appear on Venus and Mars? No explanation on what kind of organic life they have under their armor? These raids have no purpose. We are not killing an enemy boss that has major impact on the story-line. They are just .... there. This is a long thought reply. I'm sorry. maybe I should make it a new thread. But meh... like the rest of you, I am also lazy

          • Barely played and could care less. Reverse map directions? What is this, some racing game from the 90's? Same mobs? Funny. When they said they didn't cut things out of the game....well. I got a season pass, because I was betting on Bungie. I'll see it through (I'm a bit masochistic that way), but I won't bet on them again unless something pretty awesome happens. Games are about feeling good and having fun. Not enforced grinds to artificially stimulate play.

                  • I'm so on the fence about this DLC. I love the game despite all of it's flaws but it seems like week after week I find more reasons to just drop this game. I do not currently have the DLC because I wanted to wait on the reviews to see if it's what I want... And I'm not sure if I'll ever get it. For now I'm leveling some new gear to work towards 31 but things just aren't fun anymore. I'll say that $20 is not a lot of money but if it's just going to be used for recycled content then what's the point really.

                    • The dlc/game rest/ prestige. Was what really turned me off.... All the exotics basically got whiped everything I did last 3+months and 600hrs is null and void. And when they raise vog and everything to 30+ im basically sol. I have 1 character at 30 ability to be 31 no new raid and no old raid that will do me any good. My old exotics are basically decent purples now. It's just crap IMO

                      • I haven't had time to check it out yet, but truthfully I have gotten a run down from my friends who have all played throuhg everything but the raid, already finished spending time with it and said pretty much the same things about it. Below is what I have been told.. + Story much better, actually interesting. - Story added is super short and can be completed in a single lunch break.(45 minutes) - I was told bungie once again rehashed the same areas but this time around pulled a dragon age 2. Same dungeon, just have them go through the same dungeon in a different direction. If that is true, shame on you bungie! - To complete the story you are required to go through the raid, so a huge portion of the players will never get to see the completion of the story as bungie has decided to give the finger to people who don't have a huge group of friends that are interested in destiny. - little to no content for the huge price tag. Again, full disclosure, I haven't given it a shot yet, but if the above holds true, I don't think bungie listened at all to what people were saying. They pretty much did the absolute minimum they thought they could get a way with and called it a day.
