Mats are much much easier to gain than rep/marks. I'll be damned if I'd trade 10 marks for only 20 mats. I can get twenty mats (except relic iron) way faster than 10 marks, without the effort.
Simple solution: replace vg marks with crucible when you do strikes with faction items.

They might be easier because you have to try to die in patrol which makes it mind numbing boring to gather. My point was though it is 10 to 1 ratio, that is just horrible trade in any mmo or game I have ever played. As someone pointed out though "Something was taken away that he enjoyed. Don't worry about why he liked it. Put yourself in his shoes and imagine a mechanic in the game that you use being removed. It was unnecessary." I have to agree it was taken out unnecessary, since i have no idea why anyone would make the trade in the first place.
