Buy shit and break it down. If you have tons of weapons an armor, then you have tons of things that need to be upgraded. That's 18 energy/shards a piece. It's 150 marks for a weapon (3 energy) or 65 for cheap gear (3 shards), that's 900 marks per weapon and 390 marks per gear. Plus it takes literally 10 times longer to get enough marks to buy 20 mats compared to just farming them in a few minutes. It is a waste of marks for a handful of material, empirically so, there is absolutely no way it is useful unless you don't have any weapons or gear to upgrade. Out of my 24 legendary weapons, I only have 8 fully upgraded so far, that's 256 energy I still need, I still need 80 shards, and that's only for items I already have. Dark Below is coming, with tons of new armor and weapons, all of which will need 16 energy/shards to upgrade. Yet people are wasting precious items to dismantle into shards/energy by exchanging them for a tiny tiny amount of material that could be easily collected in 5 minutes. It's mindbogglingly stupid, I simply can't grasp the thought process that says "see this thing that is worse than this other thing? It's a great idea because it's so pointless!" The only reason I can think of is if they literally do not want any more weapons, or gear, ever again, yet if that were the case why the hell do they need common material.

breaking legendary stuff doesn't return all the ascendant materials you put into them. up to this day i have bought at least 15 legendary items only to break them down. just because i always have hit the weekly Mark cap or the max mark cap. so, there was never ever a reason why i would need more marks. But not having to spend an hour on the moon to farm 60-80 helium filaments: this is priceless to me! why would you even want to level up 24 legendary weapons ? 1. as soon as you have Raid gear, you don't need any other Void weapons 2. as soon as the DLC hits, the 300 attack legendaries will be underwhelming compared to the 320 attack exotics. 3. once you found your favorite weapons, you will never use the other stuff anyway
breaking legendary stuff doesn't return all the ascendant materials you put into them.
No shit, which is why I said they break down into 3 energy/shards, which is why you should use marks to buy legendary stuff from vendors instead of wasting it on common material. 1. As soon as you have new raid gear, you will need 18 shards per item. That's 3 characters, 4 pieces of gear (assuming no duplicates), 216 shards. Right now I have a double set of the current raid gear on one character, because they roll different stats (disc/int or str/int etc.), so even more shards. 2. Each new legendary weapon will need 18 energy to fully upgrade. No matter what exotics you have, 2 of your other weapons will always be legendaries. More things to break weapons down into energy to be able to upgrade. 3. That is an incredibly boring way to play. I have 4 hand cannons I like to use, 3 assault rifles, 2 scout rifles, 2 pulse rifles, 4 snipers, 3 fusion rifles, 2 shotguns, 2 rocket launchers, 2 machine guns, off the top of my head as ones I've used recently. I guarantee the new dlc will have more weapons that are fun to use. Every time you get an upgrade for a weapon/gear, you can spend the 5 minutes it takes to run around and get enough material to upgrade that individual slot, and not waste 10 marks (which I've calculated to take literally 10 times longer to get than directly getting 20 material) which could be better used stocking up on legendary upgrade material. If you don't plan on getting new weapons/gear, or upgrading ones you already have, then why the hell are you trying to trade for common material anyway? If you do want to upgrade something, it seems ridiculous to go for the least efficient way, orders of magnitude slower. I just can't wrap my head around the thought process that thinks something 10 times slower is a good thing.

  • normally Vanguard legendaries break down for 2 ascendant materials and only sometimes 3. after weekly heroic, nightfall, dailies, patrols and a couple of strikes i am always full to the brim with marks. now i can simply buy 200 materials with the 100 marks and save 2-3 hours of very boring farming time. also: you seem to be a horarder. no offense, i also have multiple versions of some legendaries and like to try them all. but to be honest: after having a Praedith's revenge and an icebreaker. why would you need another sniper outside of the Nightfall? or: After having a fatebringer, why would you need another Handcannon? i have a LOT of not-maxxed legendaries, but they don't NEED to be maxxed, since i have better choices for every single one of them.
