actually Destiny has not been the monetary success that had been hoped for. It has fallen far short of expectations. Worse still the reviews were awful so they have struggled since launch to maintain interest, in fact you might notice Bungie stopped talking about player number very very early and many suspect it is because numbers have not held up like they had hoped. I suspect Bungie are sick to the stomach the way things have turned out so far. sales much lower than hoped. reviews poor. huge volume of negative feedback. diminished player base. I also suspect the big push on pvp support is due to the cliff story player numbers fell off . EDIT. A number of replies are suggesting Destiny did really well. All I can say is read the 2014 Q3, take note of the 2013 Q3 situation. The market was not thrilled with results neither were bungie or ATVI

  • The Activision Quarterly report provided numbers of 78% profit increase that was largely attributed to Destiny. CEO quoted that Destiny has performed beyond expectations. There are 9.5 million registered users though Activision has admitted that this doesn't equate to 9.5 million copies being sold since some have multiple profiles (i.e. more than one profile in a house using the same game copy). This single Destiny title has profit that covers the $500 million franchise investment. Any additional money pulled in at this point is pretty much profit. The next quarterly report will reveal how much numbers and sales have fallen off and how many bought the DLC which is what really matters, not how many people are still playing. The poor reviews actually saved Activision money since Bungie was getting a bonus with good reviews. Reviews don't mean anything though if people enjoy the game. Personally, I thought all of the reviews were junk with the complaints being nit-picky. "Huge volume of negative feedback" is relative. What negative feedback are you talking about? The bungie.net posts by maybe 10% of the community while the other 90% are enjoying playing the game? All games encounter a diminished player base. What matters is if the attrition is greater than the norm. What statistics do you have that indicate that the current attrition is an issue?

  • $500 million was SELL IN and not THROUGH. The number being spoken out is $370 million based on 6.5 million copies sold. And is a far cry from the hoped for numbers of 10 million + Next you speak of increased PROFITS by 78%..... JUST STOP! for shame. Q3 2013 was just prior to PS4 and XBOX ONE launch, nobody was buying games, and the Q was awful ,OF course profits are way up. Add to that Q3 2014 had a new major new game in the Q which q3 2013 did not. you are comparing Qs that are polar opposites as if they should be compared. Q3 213 had no new consoles, no new game..... Q3 2014 had 2 new consoles and a major new game, of -blam!-ing course there should be a huge pop in both revs and profits, if they did not get these numbers the company would have be crushed. As it is the stock took a nose dive on destiny's numbers! Doubt me? well the charts don't lie. So not $500 million and 78% is a bullshite number to any sane investor. (Those of us who read the Qs saw through that right away...) The only thing saving the stock in the last month or so was winning the lawsuit and saving $250 Mill. Oh, the Destiny money has hardly even shown up in Q3, the monies booked are those deferred from other big game releases earlier in the year, so I really don't know wtf you are talking about trying to pretend the 78% profit increase is directly related to destiny I strongly suggest you at least read the Q notes if you don't understand the numbers.

  • Admittedly, I went for the cliff notes and just summarized the press releases. In these they summarize that Destiny was a "big" contributor, and more than 2/3's of sales were from online purchases of which Destiny DLC and the full game were a notable amount. Additionally, sales and profits both beat estimates, so it was still a good quarter in perspective. Also, if Destiny pulled in $370million by September alone, I would expect them to have made another $130million over the course of another quarter which puts us at $500 million as I mentioned. Even based on last quarter, if the revenue was $370million, that should still cover all costs to date related to Destiny so they are still in the black. Stock movement does not indicate the health of a company, only the attitude of investors. Most investors are not sane and are overly sensitive.

Destiny income is mostly deferred and not included in Q3, instead the bump is based mostly on the other two big games they released in I think Q1. so without ATVI telling us the numbers, ( and they have decided not to as of yet) we cant be sure exactly how well Destiny is doing. one would expect any gaming company to try to smooth the earnings it just makes sense. To me ATVI should be beating with a large stick for holding back on numbers, they started doing this when they saw the COD franchise getting in trouble, so with they are playing close to the chest. Myself I think if the numbers were truly strong they would have crowed from the roof tops. Stock price is complex AND just because there was a correlation between destiny's release and a stock price drop , does not mean it was causal.

  • That's pretty much a lie. You have no charts, numbers, or quotes to back that; whereas, it takes a simple Google search find the sales figures, the revenue, and dev quotes talking about how they didn't spend anywhere near the budget on this game. Just on a glance, one can see that Destiny turned a big profit and said profit was sasifactory to the point that Destiny 2 is in production and there is no talk of cancellation. If the game was doing as bad as you claimed it would be dead in the water like Bayonetta was until Nintendo picked it up.

  • and that is why real investors never 'glance" at the numbers. Suckers fall for "profits up 78%" everyday of the week.... And if you could read I never said it was a flop I said it is not doing nearly as well as hoped, the stock market agrees with me .

If you read I'd never said you said that it was a flop. That's you using those words. The stock market is a finnicky, panicky herd. That is true now, was true in the past, and will be true forever. Stocks were down for automakers, then the stimulus happened, they got on their feet and stock rose. Microsoft and Apple at times fluctuate like a stormy sea. The stock market is a momentary judge at best. It's irrelevant. What have Activision and Bungie said about the reception and future of Destiny? I haven't fallen for anything, money made is money made. Investors have pulled out, and stock price has suffered because of the panicky investors, but the budget is already set and the future is in motion. Stocks and investment are secondary revenue generators. All of this is off topic anyway since it has nothing to do with how well the game is doing.

    1) That's your opinion. I don't like MK, but they have a stable fan base. 2) the fighting game community is relatively small, like the horror game community. Only the biggest titles tend to make over a million sales. BlazBlue may sale 500,000 copies, but Arc Systems keeps making them. Because the games have a stable community.

  • That's my point. Just because a game franchise keep living doesn't mean the games are any good

  • That's not your point, and if it was it was poorly constructed. You don't have a point, you have a very weak opinion that isn't supported by solid facts and has no context.

  • I saw a momentary return in some players on my roster during iron banner, but now they've gone on again. Sad ass Bungie made it only a week long to sucker people back knowing it would be gone soon. Get your grind in. Don't actually play because you felt like it.
