Just finished DA: Inquisition. I was planning on getting Far cry 4 but now I'm going to start another play through as a mage.
Im going with a mage because all the mage companions suck and I don't want to bring them along especially with how important mages are for so many areas.

also why my post is an hour late
How does magic in that game work anyways?

In combat the supportive abilities are more important because you shield your whole team and the offensive abilities can be tide turning if the enemy has a weakness to the element in said attack but usually that's only bosses like dragons. The basic attack for the mage is the worst out of all three doing under 75% the damage of a bow on the same level. Out of combat the mage is essential in solving puzzles, creating paths and even completing quests which is honestly quite stupid because the rogue should be the class that's better for exploration.

And what can the rogue do?

Pick locks that are few and far between but is arguably the best combat class once the assassin specialization is gained because the damage output is just insane. With the assassin you can easily take down the toughest enemy on the field at the beginning of the battle.
