I tend to adapt to whatever the others are doing, but in general I prefer to be a runner. The way I see it, there are two reasons for doing a strike: either you have some kind of bounty (complete a strike without dying or kill the boos of that strike) and/or you want to get the rewards at the end. In both cases, it makes sense to get the strike done as quickly as possible and avoid as much conflict as you can (to minimise the chance of death). Obviously, the first few times I did each strike, I played through it fully to experience it. But once you have done it like 30 times, you know exactly what enemies are where and what happens. There's no real thrill or excitement (apart from maybe in a hard boss fight) and all the enemies are the same ones you've faced countless times. There is little point in killing enemies you don't have to. What could you possibly gain from it? Engrams? Well, yeah, but if you complete the strike quickly and move on to the next, you'll probably be killing a similar number of enemies in a given timespan, so your chances of getting engrams is the same. XP? The low level enemies give paltry amounts of that, and really, what's the point once you've passed level 20? Motes of Light are hardly essential. In summary, it is the most logical and efficent thing to do. Like I said, if the others want to take their time, I will stick with them. I won't be that asshole who runs off, dies, and essentially abandons the team. But I don't get any of the hate for people that prefer to run. It just makes the most sense.
