The only things I earned were the strange coins and drops from weekly and nightfall.

Yes but you have to complete pretty much the highest difficulty strike you can to get a chance for a drop so I count that too. It's also slightly less random since its pretty much guaranteed either legendary/exotic or ascendant materials/strange coins drops.
