Plasma Screen HUD Burn-In

Destiny is console exclusive, which means almost all players play on a television, not a monitor. Many of these players play on plasma screens, millions in fact. The average play session of Destiny is logged by Bungie at 4 hours. I fall around that mark, and that's about all I've used my TV for lately, as I'm sure is the same for many players. This leads to a huge problem, one that may have already permanently damaged my near $3K TV, the HUD is burnt into my display. I'm a very proud owner of the "65in Panasonic VT60, and I paid a very pretty penny for it. Millions of others also playDestiny on plasmas, and the fact is no matter how "worn in" a plasma is, it is still prone to burn-in or image retention. Either can occur after a static image is left on the screen for an extended period of time, like say, playing Destiny for a few hours a day, with no other content appearing on the TV in between. From my recent average playtime, I now have a retained image of the bottom left HUD area burnt in my display; super bar, all 3 weapon slots, among blur where ammo is counted and so on. I left my TV wiping for 12 hours, and the image is still there. (Update 11/19) My TV has been wiping for almost 24 hours, and still has the HUD clearly burned in. (Update 11/20) My TV has been wiping for almost 48 hours straight. The HUD is still there, but instead of a dark gray shadow, it seems to be a tinge of pink. This is a bad sign) There is a simple solution for preventing this, and still being able to enjoy long play sessions. Battlefield 4 got this perfect right off the bat, they added the option to adjust HUD opacity in the video options. This completely stomped the possibility for image retention, and even after hundreds of hours of gameplay I never had a problem. For those who don't know, this option would make it possible to have your HUD slightly see-through so the pixels are being stimulated. This is a very big deal, and has the potential to ruin many plasmas, only from playing Destiny for an average play session, even with days in between. BUNGIE PLEASE, add a simple HUD opacity slider and put all your plasma owners at ease. Love, every Destiny player with a plasma. Please comment to get this noticed.

    • I happen to agree with the OP and think it's not too much to ask for Bungie to consider allowing people to change the brightness of the HUD elements. How does this affect all of the LED owners who are so obviously superior in life? Hint: it doesn't. You might think the answer is for the OP to buy and LED TV and that plasma TVs are stupid. That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. It is my opinion that you are an entirely useless life form and a drain on the collective intelligence of the world. I am entitled to this opinion. Useful, right?

    • I have an off-brand LED - got a good deal on it for fathersday sale at best buy few years ago. And the Orbit screen has fried some of my screen. Hard to explain but basically the sun and everywhere that's orange from the sunlight has burned the pixels or soemthing. Sucky... you can really see it horribly bad when the TV is turned on and there's a black screen..loading or really really dark area. Guess thats what I get for buying an offbrand.

        • 1. It will usually go away 2. Your brightness must be up way too high on your TV. There's an in-store mode that makes everything look super good but should be changed to standard settings once you get it in your house.

          • Depending on the brand, it might have an option for Pixel shift, I have a 42 Inch Samsung that is getting old and I have pixel shift every 1 minute and the hud hasn't affected it once. Now when I leave my screen for a few minutes though and controller disconnects it burns in for a few. A hud opacity shader would be an excellent idea, but for now I would either turn down game brightness or cell light on your tv, or change your picture mode all together.

                    • Newer plasmas really shouldn't have this problem. I've got a 64" Samsung upon which I've played 8+ hour marathons without issues. I take it this was an older model if you paid 3K for it.

                      • Damn I feel for you man, but everyone knows to stay away from plasmas maybe for 8 to ten years now. If you paid that much for it then it is at least 8 years old or you got robbed. I have an 82inch Mitsubishi rear projection with DLP(digital light processing) the same technology used in IMAX theaters. No burn in, no ghosting and I paid less than you did with the 82" stand included. Hope you can upgrade soon because that imprint is there to stay.

Yeah plasmas aren't really for gaming. This is exactly why I returned my Panasonic ST65 this time last year. There are plenty of resources on the web stating this. Analogy I made is plasmas are like Ferraris, they have superior performance, but you wouldn't want to use one as a daily driver. The picture quality was amazing, (mostly, when linebleed didn't crop up) made GTA5 on 360 look like next-gen compared to my old TV. Anyway, my point was even after "proper" break-in (running colored slides for 150hrs before using it), and having the image shift option on and even running slides after 1+ hours of gaming Id still easily start to get burn in from games to network TV logos. It be came way too much of a stresser for me to enjoy my gaming habits (3-6hrs a day), and I realized a plasma was NOT the TV for what I wanted to do. I returned it to Best Buy after 2weeks and got a cheaper LED Samsung and have been happy ever since. Sure the picture isn't nearly as amazing, but the trade off is I never once have to think about if gaming an extra hour would damage the thing. Plasmas have amazing picture quality, but only really practical as an "extra" TV that you only use an hour or 2 a day. Like if you have a theater room or something. But using as a primary "living room" TV is going to quickly become a headache, especially if your someone with an eye for detail and/or an avid gamer. Edit: Also I highly doubt "millions" play Destiny on a plasma, as plasma TVs only accounted for less than 6% of all TV sales last year.

                            • Um having bought a plasma you should know that they are prone to burn in. Maybe you should have switched over to another channel for five minutes for every hour of gameplay.

                                • I have a Pioneer Kuro 50" plasma with no burn in issues. I have nothing to worry about.. My Pioneer is at least 6yrs old, purchased it brand new. I have played lots of Xbox games over the years on this Plasma. Brand new out of the box the plasma TV is at its highest setting. You need to have the Plasma TV calibrated (ISF/THX certification). Sorry to say it's not the game developers or the TV makers fault, it's the owner for not doing the necessary research prior in purchasing the TV..

                                    • That def sucks!!! Plasma is the ultimate in picture quality that the LCD/LED fanboys will never know about. Luckily I havn't had any issues with my 50" or 47" yet. Both are 5 years old. I refuse to buy a new TV til OLED is affordable. LCD/LED TV's look so pixelated and when you get into the higher Hz you have to deal with that crappy soap opera affect. Nothing worse than watching movies and feeling like you are stuck watching "Days or our lives" with the girls.

(Well anyone paying over 1k on a tv ought to know). Know your equipment and what you plan to do with it, video games have been a bane on plasmas since day one. I don't think it's the developers problem. If they include it, well done kudos to them. If not, adjust your play time, screen size, etc etc.
