Have a peek on Youtube for the video footage of a complete VoG raid. It's NOT going to have all the answers, but it WILL give you an idea on what you are facing. DarkChildOfLight is pretty much spot on with what he's saying. My first raid was last night and I listened to what the other guys were saying prior to launching into each next section. That advice and guidance was truly invaluable. I was partnered with a chap who has loads of experience and it made the process a lot easier, and more enjoyable. Oh yes, wait until everyone is together before opening chests! If you don't have loads of friends playing Destiny, seek out a clan. That's what I did and got lucky with a team I work with easily.
