There's two different types of Awoken: Reef born and Earth born. After the collapse some Awoken came back to earth after things had kind of stabilized, which is why your character can be one. The reef born are the ones who chose to stay, which is why the queen doesn't treat you like one of her "subjects"

.. but several in-game characters imply that your character wasn't around during or after the Collapse, so you'd have existed pre-Collapse. The OP's entire point is that Awoken did not exist pre-Collapse, but our characters did.. so how can our characters be Awoken?
