It makes me chuckle when people can't see a story. Just because the protagonist isn't visible (look in the mirror) the public gets lost in the events. I think Bungie made the mistake of assuming the public would digest such a large spoon, so big that the sides were not visible to the diners. Edit: a clear protagonist within the story line, it would help the lazy readers.
