Here I will try to explain a possible origin of Rasputin and his "demise" at the end of The Collapse.
Rasputin
Rasputin is a Warmind from Russia. He was created during The Golden Age before The Collapse and was believed to have been destroyed during the event. During a mission in Destiny's story lol. Rasputin is said to still be alive or active.
Quote form Dinklebot:
GHOST: They didn't get much. Kept hitting an active firewall. Old Earth, Russian. The legends are true. A Warmind did survive the Collapse. Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived. And he's protecting something here in the Cosmodrome. We have to find a way to reach him.
The Warminds: Are just as the name says. They are highly intelligent advanced AI's Created for warfare. There were many other Warminds (8 to be exact) created for different purposes. Rasputin was created to defend Earth and stop any threat to humanity at all costs.
The Collapse
I bring us back to this line:
Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived.
Here is the text from the Grimore Card -
Ghost Fragment: Darkness
V113NNI070XMX001 SECRET HADAL INSTANT AI-COM/RSPN: SOLSECCENT//SxISR//DEEPSPACE CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT TRANSIENT. NULLSOURCE. NULLTYPE.
This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT.
Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT. Event duration ZERO POINT THREE SECONDS. Event footprint includes sterile neutrino scattering and gravity waves. Omnibus analysis detects deep structure information content (nine sigma) and internal teleonomy.
No hypothesis on event mechanism (FLAG ACAUSAL). Bootstrap simulation suggests event is DIRECTED and INIMICABLE (convergent q-Bayes/Monte Carlo probability approaches 1).
No hypothesis on deep structure encoding (TCC/NP-HARD).
Source blueshift suggests IMMINENT SOLAR ENTRY.
Promote event to SKYSHOCK: OCP: EXTINCTION. Activate VOLUSPA. Activate YUGA. Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action.
I am invoking CARRHAE WHITE and assuming control of solar defenses.
SKYSHOCK ALERT= network wide alert aka threat con warning level
SECRET= classification
HADAL= defined as: of, relating to, or being the parts of the ocean below 6000 meters (about 20,000 feet); being paired with a classification I think this can be translated as "top secret"
INSTANT = type of message, guessing like out text message system used in blue force trackers currently
AI-COM/RSPN= the sender, communication from RASPUTIN AI Warmind
AI-COM: AI communications?
RSPN: Rasputin
SOLSECCENT: SOLar SECurity CENter?
SxISR=This is what the message is Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance report; not sure on the Sx part. maybe the type of asset, sensors?
DEEPSPACE= Location reported from
CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT= Current activity
TRANSIENT, NULLSOURCE, NULLTYPE= These should be descriptors for what is being observed, these entries inform us the contact was new with unknown elements
Blueshift: phenomenon caused when an object is approaching the viewer-opposite of redshift, when things are moving away
VOLUSPA: Norse mythological tale in which a seeress relates a series of stories to Odin.
Significance: Almost certainly because it contains the story of Ragnarok, the Norse version of the apocalypse in which the world is destroyed. May refer to activating defenses for a massive battle.
YUGA: A Hindu cosmological period of time.
Significance: A YUGA is composed of a cycle from a Golden Age to a Dark Age and back again. May refer to the idea of bunkering down and waiting the enemy out before counter attacking.
CARRHAE WHITE: a defensive plan? Named after a battle in which Roman soldiers were surrounded by mounted archers and annihilated -- Does the name refer to the idea of defending against an enemy that surrounds you? In which case, why name it after a battle in which the defenders were slaughtered? Or is Rasputin going to try to surround the invaders?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This seems to be the point at which The Darkness came in which Rasputin did his duty, to protect mankind.
Again I bring this line up:
Rasputin... an AI built to defend Earth. He faced The Darkness and survived.
Here is the text from a grimoire card that explains Rasputin's battle with the Darkness.
...from a red space before victory
I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone.
They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn.
Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT.
Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?
I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well:
IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins.
I am made to win and now I see the way.
Card not yet acquired
Rasputin refers to his brothers and sisters the Warminds who were defeated by the darkness. He now bears the heavy burden of saving the world and stopping the darkness. We created him to be stronger than us and survive the unthinkable and he is stronger than us and has survived The Darkness.
He then Refers to IT. The Darkness, something so powerful he doesn't know what to call it or how to describe it. he met it at the gate of The Garden (The Black Garden?) It was stronger than everything and yet he survived.
The Darkness swallowed him and made him stronger. IT showed him how to defeat it, making him stronger. To beat the darkness you need Light. The Light being souls. The Traveler contains these souls and converts them into light. The Darkness consumes light and devours it entirely because there is more of it. Rasputin finding this to be the only way to stop The Darkness, let his shield down. Meaning he let the darkness in so that he could sacrifice millions of humans to gain an EXTREME amount of Light. This however only wounded The Darkness enough for it to go away for a long period of time. Rasputin how ever did ensure that enough human survived so that he could complete his mission which is to protect humanity at all costs. Rasputin saved us and then went into hiding, plotting and preparing for The Final War with The Darkness which he plans to win. How you may ask we can only wait and see.
Edit: "I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive?"
An Aurora Knife is a small blade...impossible to fight the darkness with that.
An Aurora is a natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky, usually near the northern or southern magnetic pole. (Google an Image of It)
A Knife is a weapon...
Aurora= Light
Knife=weapon
Aurora Knife = Light Weapon

Hi Little known fact about Rasputin was he was Russias' greatest love machine... cheers
-
I still think where it says it shrugged off the shield and billions fell down off me into the ash, that it is refering to the ghosts. I think that card is the Traveler speaking, not Rasputin.
-
Thanks for all this! With this and some responses, it makes me feel like that is why we are simply viewing lights within the city. Rasputin gave up enough of humanity to fight back the darkness, so there is not much of a populace to interact with (for all those wanting to go down to the city). One thing that I am curious about though...IT prevented itself from consuming so much light as to kill itself, so Rasputin did not need to pull up his defenses again. What if IT was incapable of such restraint? Would Rasputin have pulled up defenses and fought a different way? Would IT along with Humanity be lost simultaneously? I am willing to bet if IT ever truly did rise again, there would not be enough remaining Light to overcome the darkness. BUT, #Bludapostle brings up a point that can counter my idea :) Going off that idea however, why are we fighting the Vex? If the Vex are part of Rasputin's defense, would he not reach out to the Speaker or any of our Ghosts that we are fighting the wrong enemy? *insert conspiracy theories here* It seems that after the battle between IT and Rasputin, humanity took too long to return to strength. In the time period that we were gone, other life forms needing new worlds came into the picture, and we are trying to reclaim our territories. That perspective can give some truth to those who believe we are the "bad guys" and the other races are being invaded by us. If you were to go buy an abandoned building, find a bunch of items while renovating, then a few years later a previous landowner came back trying to kill you for stealing his stuff because he was run out of town during a war...well...albeit far-fetched, it's kind of what we are experiencing in Destiny... :)

Here's a scenario that I have been contemplating for a while. What if the vex aren't evil at all? Stay with me, I'll try to explain the best that I can. When we're first introduced to the vex, a mysterious stranger that was not "forged in the light" tells us that they are "so evil that they despise other evil". As far as I see it, this strangers only goal seems to be destroying the vex. She never talks about any of the other races. Why are we taking the word of the shadiest character in this game? One thing she says is true; they are killing the other races. They fight the fallen on venus and the cabal on mars. Unless I'm wrong, I don't remember the game ever showing them as an invasive force. In fact, the two major times times that we fight them (the black garden and vault of glass) we invade them. Also, keep in mind that on mars we are told that they're not planning to invade....they're leaving. Going home. So, here's my thought. What if the vex are Rasputins defense against the darkness? "The gatelords protect the realms that the vex lock out of time". Rasputin fought the darkness and knew that it didn't have the power to destroy it, so it just prevented it from escaping and spreading further. Like i said, it's just an idea. What do you guys think?
-
I don’t think the vex are Rasputin defenses, but if a go with this teory then maybe the Vex where created by Rasputin to kill humans and transform planets to kill in mass so the light generated would hurt the Darkness, but this method could be too extreme so the traveler stop the vex (the part where it is said that the vex where stopped by the traveler) And now the Vex trapped in the black barged found a new god (the grimoire card where it is said that they could found in religion a better tactic/algoritm) and that god is now the darkness
-
you left out the part where he was poisoned, shot, stabbed, rolled up into a carpet and thrown into the river. Oops wrong Rasputin my mistake
-
Rasputin confirmed to be Master Chief
-
This makes me sad for what could have been.

Edited by Angus: 10/13/2014 2:13:20 PMBased on what you've already pointed to, some other info on the thread and stuff I dug up myself I have put together a translation of Ghost Fragment: Darkness. I think it may throw a new light on Rasputin's role in the whole matter. Thanks for your interesting work on what is going on behind the scenes in Destiny's story!

Edited by Steel Assassin: 10/13/2014 5:54:25 PMEdit: I think the narrator was actually the Traveler Surprised you didn't elaborate on the Titanomachy, which is Greek mythology. It talks about the battle between three generations of gods before humanity entered the fray: The primordial gods, their children the Titans, and their children, the Olympian gods. Because of that, because the Titanomachy is before humanity's existence, I think this deals with the Traveler, not Rasputin. Of course,it could also mean before we, the Guardians we play as, enter the fray instead. In the same grimiore card that discusses the Titanomachy, it talks about an entity known as "the gardener." I took that to mean a godlike entity that (at least at first) ruled over the Vex, at least until IT defeated the gardener. Given that the gardener was stronger than the narrator of the card, but not strong enough to defeat IT, I theorized that the gardener is a reference to a Titan; specifically, Chronos, the god of Time. Given that time travel is an important feature of the Vex, it seems to fit nicely. I think then that IT/The Darkness is a primordial god in the reference, either Chaos (the Void), or perhaps more fittingly, Erebus (the DARKNESS). Stolen from Wikipedia:
The perceived meaning of Erebus is "darkness"; the first recorded instance of it was "place of darkness between earth and Hades."
Primordial deities in Greek mythology are also "depicted as places or realms" or simply as elements of nature. In another grimiore card (I can dig for it if you like), Toland describes the Darkness as a force of nature; there's no 'reason' to it, it just simply is, it exists because it wins. Whether I'm right or wrong about the narrator being the Traveler, it certainly seems that that Titanomachy is important to consider.

isnt Rasputin from Hellboy the 1ste movie?
-
I'd rather olay through a story mission all about Rasputin and discover it IN-GAME! Dumb ass bungie dev's.

Intresting read!

Awesome read bud, thanks for that. Very interesting.

-
TL:DR - More story with better writing than the actual Destiny story, only missing a game to go with it.
-
I think the other warminds are still alive. I saw someone on the forums post that the 9 who xur works for may be warminds who survived as well. Which if they are trying to beat the darkness makes sense that they are giving the best gear to guardians since they need is to help them beat the darkness and other alien races

What if Aurora is referring to a location? What if Rasputin somehow pushed back the darkness from earth using some sort of power from the north pole? Maybe the magnetic field around earth? Just questions to promote thinking.
-
Keep doing more of these, the community needs to emulate people like yourself that have a talent for figuring these things out and presenting them in a way that everyone can understand.
-
This is the reason Bungie don't want to put more stories in the game, we can crack this out instead of just listening to the Ghost... This is way more fun
-
this guy spent more time on the story than Bungie. They should hire you.

Saint-14's Position argues that the Darkness was an invading armada, an alien force of incredible - but tangible - power. Some adherents believe that this armada sprang from species rejected or discarded by the Traveler for their sins. Ulan-Tan's Thesis considers the Darkness a necessary symmetry to the Traveler in a cosmic balance. In this view, the Traveler's goodness led it to sacrifice for others, and it is up to us to return this goodness by healing the Traveler. The Monist Position, or the Deflationary Position, considers the Darkness as a technologically sophisticated force, perhaps a post-Singularity intelligence. Adherents invoke information theory or contend that the universe is a simulation, allowing advanced intelligence to gain weakly acausal powers by bending the rules. The Acataleptic Clause claims that we are intrinsically unable to understand the Darkness. In many respects this belief parallels the Praxic Creed, which suggests that we should stop worrying about the nature of the Darkness and focus on resisting and defeating it. Certain positions - often labeled heretical - imply that the Traveler itself triggered the Collapse, or that it knew the Darkness was coming for it and hoped to use the Solar System as a sacrifice or a proxy army. The Binary Star cult is one notable example.
-
What about the grimoire cards about the vex? before the collapse some scientists found the vex. They were able to see the thoughts of a vex unit. This vex was running a simulation of the world. They saw themselfs in this simulation. They said the exact same things. they were afraid they also lived in a simulation. The scientist made a plan to get rasputin in this simulation. Raspution is too smart for the vex. They aren't able to predict his actions
-
so rasputin is going to be a boss we have to fight because he plans to sacrifice us again to gain more power to fight the darkness? eems like this could be a raid on earth...
