The thorn is more useful for PVE, unless you like using hand cannons for PVP, while the invective is more useful for PVP, so if you play PVP a lot get the shotgun, if you play PVE a lot get the hand cannon

Thorn is harder to get but Invective is easier but Thorn is better

One thing about invective since I've used it last is that in two shots I can take down a major (yellow health bar) hobgoblin which helps a lot
