Why is the first mission the only one that feels properly designed?

Note: For people coming in here with the "The game is going to unfold over ten years" argument: that's false. Bungie has agreed to make four (4) complete titles, with dlc and 'expansions' for each over the course of ten years. So the franchise will unfold over ten years. If you don't believe that, go look up the contract between Bungie and Activision that was made public in the case against IW.. In regards to the reddit posts recently, for the sake of remaining factual and accurate, I will not be using any information provided there, whether or not it turns out to be true, it can't be proven either way right now. If the rest of the game was more like the first mission, this game would have been so much better. The enemies are either already there, or drop from the ceiling, or climb up through the floor, or climb down the walls. There are no smoke-spawn-doors, or enemies popping out of midair. It feels natural and immersive. Your ghost has the most dialogue in the game in this I one mission. And it feels natural, not as good as what was shown in the gameplay reveal of the same level, but better than the rest of the game, except for "Fallen ships? THIS CLOSE TO THE SURFACE?" that just felt cheesy. My one and only gripe about this level, other than the fact that it's the only well designed mission in the game (IMO), is that if you get to the part where the fallen ships fly overhead, and hug the right wall, there's an area that seems to lead off into a wide open space, that I got excited for finding the second time around, I missed it the first time, and there's a kill barrier there... Is that where the earth we saw in the vidocs is hidden? And if so, do you plan on ever letting us go there? I haven't yet played the raid, but from what I hear, it's the only other well designed 'activity' in the game.. That and maybe the sword of crota, but only because I loved using the sword so much... Please Bungie, whatever you did for the first mission that you didn't do for the rest, continue that into destiny 2, or even the dlc.. We want more well designed missions like the first mission and the raid.

  • I have to agree with OP on this. The first mission was mind blowing for me. By the end of it I was practically foaming at the mouth from the awesomeness because I thought it was setting the stage for an incredible experience. But then I was literally told by the game that it doesn't have time to give me a story, or tell me why I'm doing what I'm doing. Rumors of staffing and development aside, it does lend itself to a bit of a disjointed experience.

    • I'm noticing how it seems they want you to keep playing crucible , is it possible that bungie and activision have different goals in mind perhaps bungie wanted a deep rich co-op story and activision wanted another call of duty mega hit . This all came to my attention watching the new cod game the physics of the game the movements and game play resembles destiny game style . So in my theory maybe activision is trying to force bungie to make people be more interested in pvp other than a story . I think the same happened to BF4 were in they wanted the cod community and they got some of it and ruined the game.

      • Raid good, rest bad... Most annoying thing is I spent my money to wait 10years to finish the story.... I think not I don't mind DLC's or extra missions but £40 for the DLC incase it might have a story with some answers??? Or will the children be scared that I can't wait for Halo... Less money, 4 games, matchmaking that's fair, 4 people can play together yes I said 4 not 3, free tv show, and a beta without pre ordering... Sounds just what someone would expect from a company that makes games

      • *IF* you believe the rumors and reddit threads its because this may be one of the only "untouched" portions of the game after they hacked the story to pieces. I for one believe, as others do, that the intro we have now was meant for the Exo and the Awoken / human had their own separate starting missions that made more sense. Also, did anyone else notice a few of the zones that were revealed in the "map glitch" were level 10-12. Does anyone really believe that there will be level 10 zones in the DLC? Or is it more believable that these were part of the original story that had you bouncing around from planet to planet a bit more? Or maybe story lines that had players of each race visiting their "home"?

        • this game could have been tremendous...instead it's just blah....i keep thinking about the original vision of destiny and all that could have been. that game could have become legend....instead we get this watered down version that while playing when my GF says "honey i need you to help with blah blah blah" i have not problem dropping the controler. i was really looking for a reason to break up with her and the original vision of destiny was the basket i put all those eggs into. don't get me wrong for some reason i don't understand i keep playing it over and over agian at the same time thinking "wow this is really boring" or "what is the story/reason behind this particular event i'm doing". remember grape drink and grape juice look the same and sometimes taste the same but they are not the same formula. right now destiny is grape drink and the original vision is the grape juice i salavate for.

          • Because that's the only mission that was put in the game the way it's supposed to be. All the others were cut down thanks to Activision forcing Bungie to release the game earlier than they wanted. This game was no where near complete but Activision wouldn't give them more time

          • Agree 100%. It's the only level that's packed with cool cinematic setpieces: the lights coming on and revealing Fallen crawling everywhere, the Ketch dropping in an knocking over a colony ship, or the Captain and his minions leaping off the ship they're scavenging. Admittedly it lends credence to that Reddit post that said the original story was supposed to have a lot of epic moments like those.

              • The main developer from the story left proior to the games release. So he took all his (owned) ideas with him as most developers do. Then Bungie state if the game does well in its current state they we redevelop and expand the story once again. There is an interview on line with one of the head developers if you don't believe me and explain this much more in depth. It wasn't entirely their fault and they wanted to release a game so people could have what they wanted instead of holding it back. They took into consideration what the fans wants and they still are. It takes time to rewrite a game and campaign.

Also in the first mission there are trip mines/ laser mines that appear no where else in the game. These were cool and added a little something to the game cause you could slide under them or shoot them to damage Fallen.

                    • Because the first mission is to teach you the buttons and your abilities... Also this isn't a complete game and is meant to be continued , hence the lack of ending. You guys are bitching after reading the first chapter of a book and have yet to read /experience the other 50 chapters. Like to see what some of you kids do during Christmas time . You guys open all your shit two months before because you dont wanna wait?

                        • This kinda stuff needs to come in patches for existing missions and also needs toI be consistently done for new missions. Like its been said, you see the fallen crawling on the walls in the first mission and having very distinct traversal movements. Same with the hive. First time you see them they are moving all creepy up the walls. From then on, every species of enemy has the same moonbounce jump to get onto any obstacle. And you never seem to get into fights in a lot of long hallways around old Russia that you'd think would find tons of fallen to fight through.

                        • Maybe because it was the only one that didn't require coop or exist in the persistent environment? You can see in the design of the game they tried to take advantage of reusing the environments for patrol and strikes, both of which can support coop. Not in every case, but just seems like they couldn't get more unique missions in the way they designed the game. I'm not saying this as an excuse, im saying it's the result.

                            • All the levels feel the same, you shoot bad guys. Well thats just great isnt it. At least the first level had some kind of dialogue and structure. Destiny is becoming frustrating to say the least.

                            • The story got majorly revised. Reasons unknown, Bungie don't care if they basically straight up decieved us. They should've told people it wasn't the game they had been hyping up for years. Get excited for DLC guys!

                            • I think people have finally begun to notice how haphazardly this game was thrown together. It's like they were incredibly pressed for time even though the game has been in development since '09. The story is bland and very difficult to follow, the patrol missions are just pointless if you ask me, there are too few strikes which makes them repetitive and boring. I think bungie had something great back in 2013, nut drastically altered it between then and now. They obviously cut content to make launch, but even worse than that, they are making us pay to get it back.
