The Celebrity Nude Leak

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/09/02/leaked-nude-celebrity-photos-when-a-cybercrime-becomes-a-sex-crime/
It’s not the tech jargon of online privacy breaches. And it’s not the hand-wringing associated with Wikileaks. The public commentary provoked by the cyber-theft and public posting of those intimate female celebrity photos Sunday is something else entirely. It’s the language you hear when people are discussing -blam!-. The people that stole these photos aren’t “hackers,” Lena Dunham tweeted. They are “sex offenders.” “Remember, she wrote, “when you look at these pictures you are violating these women again and again. It’s not okay.” In the immediate aftermath, there was a rush among some to blame victims (Jennifer Lawrence, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and apparently scores of others) for taking nude photos of themselves in the first place — nevermind that they were intended to be private. For example: “Celebrities, make it harder for people to get nude pics of you from your computer by not putting nude pics of yourself on your computer,” comedian Ricky Gervais reportedly Tweeted (and then deleted). Writing for CNN, Peggy Drexler reacted. “Certainly, the surest way to avoid ever having your most private photos shared publicly is to not take them in the first place. … While we’re at it: Don’t leave the house. After all, you could get mugged, or -blam!-. … It’s ridiculous logic.” “In the aftermath of this theft and the subsequent online leak,” wrote Samantha Allen in The Daily Beast, “Jennifer Lawrence is receiving conflicting messages on social media about how she should respond to the widespread distribution of the photos. Predictably, several people are blaming the leak on Lawrence herself for taking the photos in the first place—instead of blaming the hacker who stole the photos and the 4Chan user who leaked them to the world….Blaming the female victim of a sex crime instead of the perpetrator is unfortunately par for the course and nude photo thefts are no exception.”
Did those celebrities have it coming? How should this be handled? What are your thoughts?

  • So, this is something that's kind of gone nuts.and that baffles me for many reasons. First off, where's the feminist outcry and FBI investigation for Dylan Sprouse or any of the other men who get naked pictures of them leaked? Still waiting on that one. Secondly, no, it's not the fault of the people in question, information that's meant to be private is not meant to be shared, full stop, they never intended for it no be released so no, them being hacked is not their fault, remember, not everyone is equal parts tech-savvy and foil hat-wearingly paranoid as to stay away from cloud services or keeping personal information to themselves. Thirdly, an FBI investigation, a lawsuit and raids on websites will not help, it's not the way to handle things like this, as we've found with GamerGate suppressing information only spreads it further, you want this to go away? You have to accept it happened and own it, a fair few of the women in these photos have done just that and they've bowed out gracefully from the whole ordeal. Finally, as I've said before, I'm an egalitarian, I stand for everyone's right but... Feminists... Calm down, I agree it's not fair on people that their right to privacy has been intruded upon but here's what a violation of privacy is not: Assault, sexual abuse, rape, a declaration of war, the innate male desire to attack women or tantamount to murder, all of which I've heard it being called from various sources. And I get it, "But the subject matter makes it different to any other form of information," maybe so, but you know what would be just as bad? Finding out personal things about their sex lives, anyone remember Max Mosely? Where was his rallying cry when details of an orgy with several prostitutes leaked? Nowhere? Okay, then please tell me how a confirmation that celebrities have genitals is any worse. tl;dr dis shiz be whak yo!

    • Taking pictures of yourself really isn't for you, it's for others. Therefore, you're a -blam!-ing idiot if you are going to complain that other people are looking at your nudes that - what do you know - you took of yourself. Moral of the story: Don't take pictures of yourself nude if you don't intend for others to see it.

        • Frankly, I don't really care about the celebrates. What bothers me is the fact that this happens to "regular people" all the time and no one seams to care. But as soon as it happens to someone popular and/or famous the American media goes crazy and starts pointing fingers. -ShadowWolf
P.S. I think that both, the celebrity's and "Mr. 4chan" are to blame for what happened.
• TBH, it IS their fault for taking nude pics. Why take them in the first place if you didn't want people to see them? They should have realized that eventually, somebody WAS going to find them. For crap's sake, who keeps dozens of nude selfies of themselves JUST to have them on their phone? It's not victim blaming; it's stupid blaming.

Here's an idea; don't take pornographic images of yourself and then get pissy when somebody finds them. That's like going out to a warzone with a bigass bullseye on your chest. You had it coming.

            • The fact the pictures exist is the celeb's fault, the fact they were leaked were the hacker's. Boom problem solved.

                      • While I understand that it's not the photographee's fault, there also needs to be a degree of realistic precaution. Empowering people by standing against victim blaming is great, but when I have large stacks of money, I keep them in a bank or a vault in my house. Because people have proven themselves to not be trusted. Never mind rights of people to place what they want where, but I am extremely adverse to the public having access to my stacks of cash, so I keep my stacks of cash in places they cannot get to.

                        • They absolutely did not have it coming. It's a gross violation of their privacy. I dunno how it should be handled... But the blame shouldn't be put on the celebrities, IMO.
