Weather!
Destiny needs an epic weather system. We had some sick thunder storms in Southeastern Utah today, and it got me thinking. Wouldn't it be amazing to stalk a patrol of Fallen warriors through the jungles of Venus during a heavy rainstorm? Visibility would be poor, you would be able to see the rain running down your visor. Water would be dripping from the trees and buildings. It would all be very atmospheric, no?
Here's another one. You get caught in a blinding sandstorm on the surface of Mars. You can barely see where you are going, when you stumble upon a Cabal unit taking cover in the shell of an old building. You look at them, they look at you. You then proceed to duke it out while you can barely see one another!
Okay, one last scenario. You are exploring the wilds of Earth at night. A menacing thunderstorm proceeds to roll overhead. It becomes quite dark, to the point where you have to use your Ghost's light and periodic flashes of lightning to keep your bearings. Then, as the wind howls through your cloak, Hive start to pour from every crevice. The once familiar landscape is transformed into a dark shadow of fear and darkness. As you struggle to survive, and are about to overwhelmed, you see another light peek over the crest of the hill. Another Guardian! Together you fend off the relentless enemy and retreat back to the safety of the Tower.
I'm just saying, weather would make familiar landscapes feel new, different, and exciting. Everything would become a hundred times more atmospheric and awesome, leaving players craving another chance to have another epic opportunity. If any one else has a cool weather situation you would like to share, feel free to do so! Let's see how many different ideas we can build up!

While flying above the earth you can see a lot of the world is covered in storms there is a chance the traveler is protecting the last city and old Russia from major storms.

Love the weather idea, nothing sucks me into a game quite like realistic weather. I love the rain.

4 RepliesIt would be very cool to have weather features in Destiny!! However, not trying to be a pain in your backside and the need to know value of this comment is probably .05% but I thought I'd let you know Earth is the mainstay of the fallen, Mars as you stated is for the Cabal, Venus is for the Vex (favourite enemy), and the Moon is the mainstay of the Hive. But as I said early I totally agree and it would be an awesome feature!!

1 ReplyOne question I have for you my friend.... why the -blam!- are you not developing this game? All scenarios sound amazing, intense, and NEW. Nobody likes to play the same map, with the same color, and same environment. I understand the weather does differ randomly, but it would just be amazing to see such a drastic change in a once familiar environment. Overall would be exciting as -blam!- and I'd fan girl so hard

I would love to see this trust me. It'd be the most amazing thing ever. But even without epic weather changes Destiny can get pretty intense out in the PvE world. Like on the last day of the beta I was out and about fighting hive and fallen when suddenly I get this message saying "The Enemy have begun fighting" so thinking nothing of it I kept on going about my business. Its only when 3 other Guardians showed up that I realized we were gonna have our work cut out for us when HORDES of Fallen and Hive pour out of every nook and cranny. As I and my fellow Guardians were crammed into the middle with no cover we fought to the bitter end. We eventually killed them all of. The entirety of the battle took well over 15 minutes before the last Vandal was crushed beneath out feet. While I never knew who they were at that moment I felt a connection to those other Guardians that I knew Bungie was striving for with this game. And I can only wait in anticipation with what the full release has in store for us

How about imagine being in a forest scene. There is a lightning storm beginning while in a battle with the hive. As you continue your battle heading towards the hive base you see a lightning strike hit a tree and causes a fire in the forest so you have to evade getting burnt from the fire and the hive. Also finishing the battle with the fire getting out of hand and you have to escape planet. That's my idea. Weather in destiny sounds cool. Gives a game more depth.

Fantastic idea. You really know how to set a scene. Though this probably won't happen. It seems like such a large change that would take some time to implement. If they were to add these features they may push back the release date. No one wants that :( I wanna play as soon as possible.

1 ReplyThis would be awesome, but I doubt it will happen, its too close to release day and it seems to major to be a patch later. Imagine if say in lightning storms you cant call your bike due to interference, enemy ships and walkers fall out the sky and just spaz out shooting wildly... kinda like you have to just hold out until the storm passes.

Agreed. Dynamic weather within combat and free roam would add so much more depth to this epic saga. :)

+1 good idea In Red Dead Redemption you had some of that. Fighting some bad guys in a rain storm with lightning made it interesting.

6 RepliesAs much as I'd like to say yes, all those extra fancy graphics sound like they would be taxing on the console's processors. I was pretty happy with the current weather in the beta, though. It's really nice when you stop to look at it.

I've always wanted weather changes in games and two of the greatest examples are in Battlefield 4. Love it or hate it they did it right. 1. A huge thunderstorm rolls in and changes the waves of the ocean, lighting effects to dark and rain pours in. The audio is the cherry on top. 2. The sandstorm that comes in from the ocean through the beaches and town changes your sight lines and blows debris everywhere making it really feel different and dramatic. If they can do it then Bungie can definitely do it! Come on Bungie please!!! :)
