The "IT'S A BETA!!!" argument is flawed.

The funny thing about these "IT'S A BETA!!!!!" arguments is this: this was just a server stress test. The game, the code, pretty much everything was already finished. they were just making sure that their servers could handle the workload for launch day. Therefore; no major (or even minor) rewriting of code will be happening. If they still had 2-6 months before release and were actively bug-hunting, I could understand a wipe for the simple fact that there might actually be changes that would affect the character you made and how it functions. Not the case here. The game will go Gold in a week, that way they can make production demands for release day. But the whole code for the game is already finished by this point. This was just a stress test. Calling it a Beta, and then giving it the full weight of hunting for bugs/glitches and calling for code rewrites is absurd when we're a month away from release. It actually isn't unreasonable for our characters to carry over at this point. No; with that said, would I care if they wiped my character? No. But the argument still stands that the whole "IT'S A BETA!!!!!" reasoning is flawed with how advanced in production the game is. How things worked in regards to game mechanics and even character mechanics and design is carved in stone at this point. There would be no way to make production demands or their desired release day if they still had to finalize the code of the game. This post was conceived out of common sense and over 15 years of Beta testing various games amongst four different genres of video gaming.

  • Flawed premise. You're assuming they're using the production version of the game without anything stripped out. Thus, this entire thread was pointless. They can use Alpha/beta/whatever to stress the test, or use a heavily modified version of the production code for beta purposes.

  • The flaw in your argument is that you are not saying in what instance " its a beta" is flawed. There are many many many situations where that argument is not flawed. Putting everything under one blanket, as you have, is flawed.

  • You still have a flawed argument however. Most every game when it releases and you finish the download still has an update because they did change parts of the code to buff it and make it smoother.

  • Beta is a limited chunk of the full game

  • I see your point, they're servers could have a bit more strength,I was kicked-out of the game-world about twice a day, but isn't that what all beta's are for? Server strength, bug hunting, getting people interested?

  • Public betas are never the most recent build of a game, especially stress test betas. Most of the bugs that people found in the game have very likely already been addressed months prior to this beta.

  • Actually the Beta build of the game was finished months before it was even live so the "it's a beta" argument is accurate.

  • So a stress test during what the company classified as a beta test is not a beta... Mmk... Clearly you are a moron.

Edit: nevermind you are talking about core mechanics... but who is even complaining about things like that?

  • The Beta is not the final game. I don't think they're going to change fundemental content based on player feedback one month before release. However, I do believe that Beta production was split off almost a year ago, in part because Bungie said so. I believe there could be significant differences in the beta vs the retail product because of this dual production. So, "This is just the Beta" is a perfectly logical argument in that context.

  • Didn't they rewrite the code for the Interceptor? Granted, that's a minor thing, but still.

    • Bungie says it's their beta, therefore it is. You aren't on the Bungie staff not are you at their studios watching them work. Everything you state is all speculation.

      • You do realize that's what betas are for right? To stress test the game to find bugs and make fixes wtf do u think a beta is? Of course the games finished it has been since before the beta but the simple fact is yes they can change minor things its not too late to do so.

        • Still a valid argument as they can easily take the data they compiled and create a day 1 update to fix issues. That's the beauty of technology and gaming these days, especially since the game is going to be an online social world much like an MMO.

        • It's a beta is the argument I use when people complain that there won't be enough to do and stuff like that. I use the argument to explain to people we haven't seen the whole game. We don't know how exotics will affect the gameplay. We don't know how big the other areas are etc. Stuff like that.

        • It is a beta though, and you can fix minor things regardless of how a tester might think. Even a title update on release date would work.

        • That's assuming that the beta build we played was the most recent build they have and I highly doubt that it was. Wouldn't they have to go and block a bunch of areas if they used the most recent code? I'm sure what we played was made months ago. Hopefully what we see on launch day is a more polished and balanced build than what we played.

          • If you were apart of the Alpha you would understand how tgis was a legitimate beta. The beta had MANY things different then the Alpha. And yes server stress testing a MMO is still apart of a beta procedure. Not sure why a thread like this wad really needed.
