Old Schoolers Unite!

Okay, I used to be really into "Halo: Combat Evolved" in 2001! Played that game forever with my friends and it always held a little nostalgia in my heart when it comes to Bungie. Then "Halo 2" came out... Multiplier was flawless. Seriously, that game is still unmatched in my opinion. Damage Ratios were so balanced and it seemed like you were able to relax and still be on the edge of you seat the entire game! Since then, I really didn't get into Bungie games like I used to. I mean, they were good. But, I think my everyday life changed and maybe the gaming styles in the industry changed. Anyway, I've been a very causal gamer since about 2004. I'll play and talk about Video Games with my younger Cousins and Brother every now and again. But, I can tell their experiences are totally abstract to mine. It's kinda funny how I'm looked at as a "Old Schooler" compared to them. While playing Halo 4 with them and talking more about games, they brought up "Destiny" in the conversation! Showed me some videos, told me more about the vision for the game... I felt that nostalgia again! That good old Bungie nostalgia! I'm just as excited for the release/beta of this game as they are! Hopefully other people experience the same feeling I'm having. Because, I really do hope that Gamers of all generations will be able to close the gap in gaming styles. I'd like to hear the rest of the community. What do you guys think? Also, What do you think a "Old Schooler" technically is? It seems video games change so fast that it makes new generations happen every other year!

  • I didn't immediately think of myself as an "old schooler" until I read some of the comments below. It’s funny how the shared experiences of many can quickly shed light on a different perspective. In my first year of college a bunch of classmates of mine would all go back to res, link a bunch of Xboxes in a LAN and play Halo until the wee hours of the morning. We bonded more over that game than we did in class. The funny thing is that not one person in that group would be classified as a "stereotypical gamer", and yet we played the sh*t out of that game. I didn't pick up any of the later Halo titles on account of me not personally owning an XBox, but I was enthralled with what Bungie had created so much so that I regularly watched Rooster Teeth's Red vs. Blue, and kept tabs on the franchise from a distance. Destiny spoke to me from day 1, and having participated in the Alpha gave me that nostalgic feel of being back in a lush sci-fi world that was surprisingly story driven. I guess that’s really the Bungie touch. The game mechanics themselves are fantastic, but it’s their careful attention to atmosphere and detail that make their games stand out. Maybe it’s my appreciation of these things that make me an “old schooler”, maybe it’s just my age. Whatever it is Bungie has done a fantastic job capturing that initial wonder (yet again), and I can’t wait to dig into anything they have to dish out.
