Use a thicker line around the body. It seems counter-intuitive, but it makes them look a ton better. Also, hand draw the eyes. Half of the emotion is represented using the eyes.

This any better?

Any suggested brush in to use in paint then?
-
Just the standard dot brush. Personally I use GIMP since it has more options (Layers, selection, etc.) but it's simp enough for Paint to suffice.

That's actually the brush I've been using. Should I just make it bigger then?

Yep. Don't make it so thick, but it should be a thicker than a few pixels. When I'm working on these, I use one that is 20 pixels thick for bigger balls. (On a 1000 pixel wide canvas.)
