What type of armor is Chief wearing by Halo 4? How does it differ from other Mark VI variants?

 • Cortana used nanobots on the Dawn to modify Chief's Mark VI. He is wearing the same armor he was wearing in Halo 2/3. Aesthetically, it resembles a variant of Mark IV, but the Halo 2/3 version resembles another variant of Mark IV, and CE Mark V resembles yet another variant of Mark IV.

 • Do you think nanobots could have done slight adaptations on Chief's armor between 2 & 3? You notice the hand guards remain square in the current version of Halo 2 Anniversary. This could be speculated as pre-nanobot modification. Though it's apparent Chief doesn't have a smart ai. But this probably just different art styles between games.

 • Between 2 and 3? No, Cortana was not with him, and I doubt there was anything on the Forerunner Dreadnaught that would have been able to do so. I doubt there is a canon reason for any differences between his armor in Halo 2 and Halo 3.

 • I would make the same assumption. Were the nanobots a feature of Dawn or did they exist on the armor itself?

 • He's wearing an upgraded MK. VI courtesy of Cortana.

 • See this doesn't make sense. Cortana said she up date the firmware in his visor. That's all. How did she manage to make brand new armor without ever taking him out of the cryo-pod? More importantly, why wasn't the battle damage fixed when she "fixed it?" This is one thing 343i really did wrong. They should have left him in the old Halo 3 armor and had him aquire the Halo 4 armor on the Infinity.

His armor was changed via nanomachines 2. 343i has the artistic liscence to change how his armor looks.

 • Firmware refers to software. I understand artistic license. Still was a piss poor attempt explain it away. Where has it been said there are nanobots/machines in the Halo universe? If nanobots were indeed used, as I've stated, why wasn't the damage to armor repaired?

 •
Firmware refers to software.
Firmware refers to an inbetween state of software and hardware, hence "firm". It's neither soft or hard.
I understand artistic license. Still was a piss poor attempt explain it away.
Don't shoot the messenger, you asked, I'm answering.
Where has it been said there are nanobots/machines in the Halo universe?
Frank O'Conner and the K5 Trilogy.
If nanobots were indeed used, as I've stated, why wasn't the damage to armor repaired?
As I said, it's a combination of artistic licence and canonical explanation.

 • The nanobots onboard the FuD were used to modify his armour.

 • What nanobots? I've never seen a source that states there are nanobots on the ship. Let alone the Halo universe. Even if what you say is true. Why wasn't the damage to his armor fixed?

 • He's still wearing his MKVI.
