What was the means of the Precursor/Star Roads used for slipspace travel? I remember it was referenced in Silentium and it wasn't called slipspace, but I forgot what it was called and how it worked. However I'm pretty sure it was independent of conventional Forerunner slipspace travel.

You are correct. It is referred to as Neural Physics Translocation. While it is instantaneous, the transition back to space-time can take time, rendering them vulnerable.
