An unfinished plot-line. However, nothing indicates they were used to travel to the Ark. If they were used in that manner, then it begs the question of how the Gravemind found the exact location of the Ark 260,000 LY away from the galactic center.

I'm moreso speculating the crystals altered the portal at Voi, moreso than it just expanded.
