The bane of my existence...
I propose that the portal generator at Voi is capable of adjusting the size of the slipspace portal. Of course, that is simple fan conjecture, and not canon, so I can't give you an answer.

I'm moreso speculating the crystals altered the portal at Voi, moreso than it just expanded.
