Homeschoolers
No, we're not unsocialized.
Yes, we have prom.
Yes, we have more free time.
No, we don't have less work.
Yes, we have outside classes.
Any other myths I can bust surrounding homeschooling?

2 RepliesI don't really know anything about homeschooling. I know there are a bunch of stereotypes about people who are home-schooled, but I assume like most stereotypes those are a gross over simplification and are not really applicable. A question...hmmm. I have a very strong urge to ask if you think your teacher is hot...but I'd prefer to not immediately go mega-juvenile/predictable. How about, are your siblings (assuming you have some) also homeschooled with you? And if so; do you all study the same stuff at the same time, or is there a delay based on your respective ages?

I was homeschooled from grades 4-7. I think I benefitted from this. Unlike my peers, because of my slightly more isolated situation I managed to avoid the vices that befell them, such as pornography, drugs, etc. Furthermore, I avoided looking like one of those idiot twelve year olds who curse because they think it looks cool.

3 RepliesI was homeschooled, and I loved it. The only catch is making sure the home educated child has friends. Going to a public school your odds of picking up a friend or two are pretty good, but when you are homeschooled your parents have to be active in your social life, unless you have a friend that lives really close to you. And much like private schools, home education usually results in higher grades :D

16 RepliesYou forgot the following. "No, we do not have social skills" "No, we are not prepared for the real world" I do some of the hiring / interview process for my office. Out of everyone I have had the most issues with people that were homeschooled, hands down. They get into drama with coworkers, They are rarely prepared for interviews, issues with showing up on time. etc

There is actually evidence that suggests homeschooling doesn't negatively affect socialization or academic experiences, so I'm liable to believe you.

With a Public School you're getting your recommended daily dose of [b]Self-Loathing[/b] and [u]Nihilistic hatred of everything[/u] we all need in order to function properly in the real world. Doesn't that sound better than being home schooled?

60 RepliesBut your education will inevitably be be skewed due to your parent's political and moral opinions. If you go to a normal school you get multiple teachers who have different world-views but if you're home-schooled you only get one. I don't get why homeschooling is still legal in the US. It allows religious sects such as the WBT to keep going for more than one generation.

With homeschool comes pros and cons. just like normal school. But yes, homeschooling parents have to take note of the cons, and work on them. Social awkwardness is a thing for many homeschoolers, even if it isnt for all of them.

1 ReplyI used to be home schooled. Hated it. My mom took me out of school after 1st grade and home schooled me until 7th grade. Constantly being around my mom all the time made me hate her, and it also made me somewhat socially awkward because I didn't get much social interaction besides the weekly meets with other home school kids. I'm so glad I got out into a public school. I joined the drama sound crew, made new friends and learned how not to be a queer. Not saying all home schoolers are queer but I was. My neighbor is home schooled. The kid is too quiet for his own good, never talks besides saying hello. Homeschooling doesn't teach you how to deal with immense academic pressure. You don't ever have times where you are cramming to study for 5 major tests all on the same day, so you can't learn time management. Especially when you get to college, it gets even more difficult. Not saying that it's an inherently bad thing, but there are a lot of negatives about it that if you don't address them properly, it can really hurt the kid.

Not all home schooled children went through the same schooling. My case is that public schooling in Nevada was terrible. There was no teaching just a test thrown at you without a chance to study. Basically telling us to teach ourselves anyways.(this was over 15 years ago, public schooling in that area may have gotten better by now, but at the time it was the worse choice)

6 RepliesSeems a bit closed off to me. In a public or state school, you're forces to deal with a variety if strangers, authority figures and outside situations, and it helps one prepare for independent life as an adult
