A dumb question that needs answering

So I've been thinking about this for a while and I'm still not sure what the situation is. In Destiny, the game is supposed to be a shared open world. What I've been thinking is how many people can be in your version of Destiny at one time. Like if I'm hanging out at the city will there be hundreds of thousands of guardians all running around in this shared world, or will it be more like just your fireteam/friends that you can see. We know about public events in game where other fireteams collide with your own fireteam to help you take down a boss. So does that mean only you and two of your friends can truly go out and explore together at any one time? Maybe numbers of players will be restricted by certain areas. So what I'm really asking is how many people will you be seeing while on your journey in Destiny. Will you see random guardians sitting down somewhere or can you only join other players in game through public events? I could have missed something but some clarification would be nice!

  • I really hope there are a lot of 360 players cause if not it will be a ghost town with not many people as Xbox one or Ps4 would have.

  • I wouldn't want 10k people running around in the same place unless the map is big enough to have all of those people and you still end up not bumping into half of them, and if it's a public area maybe around a hundred, overcrowding a game area is kind of unappealing to me,

  • Match-making is always on (hence the required online connection), and specific areas (I predict) are calibrated to have certain number of players, who are all put together through seamless matchmaking. In public areas, as seen by the Old Russia footage, the area contained 3-4 fireteams. I suspect strikes (and most PvP matches) to contain this high of a player count, whilst raids would have a slightly higher count. The City will probably have the highest player count, but not too many to overwhelm your system. I would give a guess of around 50-70 players in the City at a given time that you can observe. This is all educated speculation, however.

  • I've been wondering this myself. I've also been wondering if the servers can be cross console somehow

  • You should check out Fable 3 and its spheres. It's a setting in Fable 3 where when activated you'll see hundreds of player wandering around the various locals as Spheres. Each one is a player just walking around in their own world version. If they have Spheres active they can see you where they can trade gifts or even enter your game as a Henchman. Now I'm not saying this is how Destiny is going to work, but I found it interesting and to me it seems a good visual example of what might be happening in Destiny, but on a much more grander and superior technical level.

    • There will be different servers like in all big online games. (Unless the game runs off of a host connection, but that is HIGHLY unlikely) so although there will be hundreds of thousands if people on at a given time, they will be separated into at least ten different servers which will hold their respectful amount of players

      • Well, think about it, if human head studios and trion worlds had at least a hundred people per server on an xbox 360 then I am sure that there will be a high amount of players on a destiny server ESPECIALLY on next gen consoles.

That's not a dumb question at all, friend. To answer your question: given how many people are expected to be playing Destiny, I would expect Bungie to set up different serves, like World of Warcraft.

          • Every time you go to the tower I it might place you in a random server with random people so they can keep it non crowded- this is just what I think they will do-

They mean every player in a single world but when you join an activity [raids, matchmaking campaign, public events] there is a specific number of players that can be with you in that area.
