Most recent unemployment numbers

The Department of Labor released their monthly unemployment numbers today. The numbers were not good even though the overall unemployment rate came down slightly. A really good article on the overall numbers can be read at the New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/08/business/us-economy-adds-113000-jobs-unemployment-rate-at-6-6.html?_r=0 Looking at the numbers broken down by age and race is really disturbing though. Unemployment rate among whites, all ages: 5.7% Unemployment rate among white teenagers: 17.5% **** Unemployment rate among blacks, all ages: 12.1% Unemployment rate among black teenagers: 38% (up 5% from last month)

  • Part of the issue that causes the disparity between ethnic groups and employment rates that often gets overlooked is the funding system used to drive our education system. Statistically speaking minorities are less likely to have access to adequate funding for their scholastic needs due to the relative economic strength of the communities that they are more likely to be domiciled in. Underfunded schools = less access to adiquate education = less financial opportunities. While this is not the totality of the issue that creates the disparity that your pointing out it does explain part of the inherent disadvantage that impoverished individuals have in entering the job force.
