I can't fathom what reason there might be for a Terrorist group or otherwise to commit attacks on an event like the Olympics besides gaining infamy. If you have a specific target in mind that you want to enact vengeance or whatever on, wouldn't it make more sense to attack that group elsewhere instead of in an area where dozens of nations will be? You're pretty much pissing more people off by attacking an event like that, instead of focusing on whatever target you have in mind.
What is the reasoning for this?

Edited by Mags: 1/23/2014 3:10:21 AMThere are a few reasons. 1. The main objective of any terrorist of any ideology is to incite fear in order to coerce a political, religious, or ideological change. 2. This is a world-wide sports competition that will be viewed by millions. 3. By attacking the Olympics, an event that always has beefed up security, they would be sending a message that not even the Olympics are safe from their organization. 4. It will show that Russia, specifically, still has yet to deal with an existential security threat emanating from the North Caucasus region. 5. Terrorists generally believe that terrorism is a legitimate tactic as means to an end. 6. If they target a specific nationality, it would send a strong message to that particular state.
