Nintendo loses money for the 3rd straight year. [UPDATED]

For those of you who like to argue that Nintendo will be fine. Who like to argue that the 3DS is selling well enough that it more than makes up for the Wii U's losses. Who like to say that Nintendo detractors are 'just hatin' and 'have no idea what they're talking about'... Maybe actually see that the company's poor choices and stubbornness are killing it? Checkmate, Nintendo. Checkmate. *** UPDATED INFORMATION *** As much as we (as Gamers) may respect Nintendo for their proud history; it really is that bad for them financially... *** UPDATE 2 *** And here is Nintendo displaying their stubbornness over these serious financial issues... It's their own hubris that has led to this decline, and it is that same hubris that may dismantle the company. Shame.

I think it's a bad idea for Nintendo to stop making hardware. Nintendo's hardware has traditionally been profitable, though the Wii U is unfortunately sold at a loss. And Nintendo runs less of a risk of marginalization if it has a way to get content directly to consumers. Consider the cases of Google, which runs wildly popular services but still decided to pursue its own OS, or Amazon, which provides wildly popular content but still decided to build its own tablets. When Microsoft wanted to push its new OS and apps (Xbox Music, Bing, IEWhatever) onto consumers, it built its own tablet. The common thread here is that by building your own hardware, you control your own destiny. That's obviously a double-edged sword if you end up building bad hardware. There are some miscellaneous benefits. You collect money from software that people sell on your console. You can run your own store and push the software you want at the times and prices that you want. Also, while a complete failure of the Wii U would be disastrous, Nintendo has the strength to absorb the loss. They're pretty liquid with $5 billion in cash assets, and they have about the same in bonds. They're no Microsoft, but they can weather the storm. I would say that there are ways for Nintendo to avoid the storm altogether.

Nintendo has a huge war chest of cash. They can go through multiple console failures (not that it's recommended). It seems every day there's a new Nintendoomed article or thread somewhere. Yes, the WiiU is a total and complete flop ATM. That's undeniable. But it alone won't kill Nintendo, and anyone who thinks it will is foolish. The reason that the WiiU is failing isn't due to people not wanting Nintendo products. It's an image issue. Sticking a 'U' at the end of the Wii name isn't going to effectively tell people that it's a new platform, it's the same issue the 3DS initially had. The console looks like a Wii, and the controller is the emphasis, making the general public believe it's just a Wii add-on. And the final nail in the coffin is that there is simply no marketing for the thing. Plain and simple. So all-in-all, will Nintendo die/be doomed/go bankrupt/go third party as a result of the Wii U? No. However, they definitely need a new strategy, as they simply aren't moving any units. We'll see if such a thing comes to fruition.

            • I think that I agree with Iwata on keeping their exclusives well... exclusive. I say this because sure, it would be cool to be able to play Zelda or Mario on Xbox but the xbox is not a system designed by Nintendo with their games and what they wanna do with them, in mind. Though they should definitely try to keep 3rd party devs in mind as well, which they haven't. That's not to say that Iwata is right on not making a couple spin-off games or something for phones and/or tablets, but I agree that they shouldn't essentially become 3rd party developers.

                  • I remain shocked that Nintendo is sitting on billions of dollars' worth of IP and refusing to release it on more popular platforms. Mario and Zelda games would sell millions and millions and millions of copies on consoles, mobile, and possibly even PC. It is insane that the most successful video game publisher of all time is STILL trying to use the most recognizable, popular, and profitable video game franchises in the history of video games to drive sales of mediocre and less profitable hardware. Seems to me like someone over at Nintendo needs a good smack to the head. Stop making hardware, focus on your software, and make it available cross-platform.

                    • They've made some baffling decisions, I'm not surprised they're bleeding money. They used to be King of the Hill for decades and got too comfy there. It's too bad really, they are our last hope for gaming, and they're dying.

                    • I feel like they need more 3rd party support than anything. Everyone always wants the new Pokemon and the new Smash Bros, but nobody really wants the systems. At this point it's almost like the new systems are just extra money you need to spend to get the 2 or 3 games you want. I have a 3DS, but only because I wanted the new Pokemon games. Nintendo's lack of 3rd parties forces gamers into "Yeah; I bought the Wii to play Brawl, but my 360's where the real shit's at." I feel like a more diverse library (and 1st party games that aren't literally the same 5 universes getting new games over and over) would make Nintendo consoles the medium that gamers want, and not the one just to get the 3 games Nintendo is holding hostage.

                    • I'd pay attention to Nintendo but they offer me nothing interesting as a gamer. I want to see something a lot less kid friendly from them in the future. I don't even consider them to be game developers anymore. Just toymakers. Whimsicle, whimsicle toymakers.

                    • Did the Wii U sell like shit last year? Yes. Did the 3DS outsell the 360, Xbone, PS3, PS4, and PSVita? Also yes. But I am confident that Nintendo has made enough money from the Wii that they can ride out this gen and make comeback next gen.

No one can deny that Nintendo is in a very bad place with the Wii U right now. That being said, they're sitting on plenty of money, so they can weather this storm, however bad it may get. They've still got the 3DS, which is doing very well, even if it can't totally cover the losses. I will say that I don't totally agree with Iwata's decision to stay on- they need new blood. At the very least, he needs to start training a replacement so he can bow out gracefully.

                        • Yeah, Nintendo needs to just focus on the handheld market and stop making gimmicky, underpowered consoles. Maybe even publish some of their IPs for Xbox and PS.

Uhm Microsoft and Sony only made profits on the Xbox 360 PS3 on the consoles final years, also that article is about the Wii U, Nintendo still has the 3DS which is selling HUGE.

                              • And all the reactionaries will say how Nintendo should go third party like they do every time Nintendo gets into a slump. Sure, the Wii U is doing lousy. Whose to say they don't pull a 2DS, scrap the gamepad, and offer a dirt cheap alternative to their competitors like they did with the Wii?
