As President Obama and other world leaders spoke Monday in Johannesburg at a memorial for Nelson Mandela, a man stood nearby and appeared to be doing sign language interpretation. Many in the deaf community are outraged because the man appeared to be faking.

The country’s deaf community and the ruling African National Congress have no knowledge of who the man actually is, despite him appearing on television gesticulating alongside South African President Jacob Zuma last year, Reuters reported.
"I don't know this guy. He doesn't work for the ANC. It was a government event. Ask them," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.
U.S. Secret Service Spokesman Brian Leary stated that the department is aware of the matter, but declined to elaborate.
Zuma’s office is also trying to find out the man's identity, according to Reuters.
Bump!
-
The deaf community will never hear the end of this story.

Edited by Elaborate : 12/14/2013 6:40:10 AMSo this is apparently what he actually said...

Maybe he was signalling to the runner on first to steal.
-
I just farted.
-
I don't get it.
AP Interview: Interpreter for deaf at Mandela memorial saw 'angels,' has been violent in past.
I'm pretty curious for more details. How violent? How close were we to some sort of tragic incident?
There's outrage among many in the deaf community

outrage......deaf community
lol

This cries out for a Rowan Atkinson treatment.

SNL did it first.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA As much as a dick move that is, it's porching hilarious!

Yea I heard that on the radio. Deaf people or people who speak on their behalf are getting pretty butthurt over this.

Edited by MastaSin: 12/12/2013 5:01:11 AMNew trololol guy, he was spelling in sign language TRololol!

Looks like he wasn't even trying to keep up with him while he was talking, because he only moved his hands twice or so after he started a new sentence.
-
Legen- wait for it -dary

Is it wrong if I find this funny?

Edited by qy: 12/12/2013 4:16:51 AMWhat was he saying, if anything? Edit: just watched the video and lol'ed.

Lol dicks

I heard about this story and laughed my ass off. I do understand the pain of those who happen to be deaf who wanted to be able to experience this event themselves and were denied that due to the fraud, but man... the utter magnitude of that f up is just hilarious. A day of pretty much global mourning for somebody as influential as Mandela, and nobody bothers to check the identity/legitimacy of that random dude sitting there. What's even more interesting is he could have had a weapon... a knife, a gun, anything, and probably could have assassinated one of like 20 different world leaders since clearly nobody paid any attention to him. Freaking hilarious. Way to go, world.

Edited by CAMMCAM: 12/11/2013 6:44:24 PMI am actually pretty pissed off about this. Sign language is my second language and it's extremely important to me that the hearing impaired are just as easily aware as we are. For something like this to happen, enrages and disgusts me. It wasn't fully heard or understood by all. THAT bothers me.

This looks like something out of a Mr. Bean movie. (or Johnny English)
-
Well then

As much as I normally love to see a good rustling, a funeral really isn't the place for that.
