3 people died during SAS selection, Should things change?
The HSE has issued a formal notice on the MoD after the deaths of three Army reservists on SAS selection tests in the Brecon Beacons. In July L/Cpl Craig Roberts, L/Cpl Edward Maher and Cpl James Dunsby died after a hike on one of the hottest days of the year. The notice requires the Ministry to take action to deal with risks arising from its military selection exercises. An investigation into the deaths is continuing. The soldiers were on a 40-mile (64km) hike over the Brecon Beacons in Powys on 13 July when temperatures reached 29.5C (85F). They were among six men rescued from the mountain during an exercise, which had been part of a four-week trial for the Territorial Army's SAS reservists.
These men knew the risks when going for the selection, the process is difficult and known from time to time that people die. How on earth is the SAS supposed to have the most strict and rigorous selection and training regime in the world and yet expect to "cut risks"? Surely they must be ready to fight anywhere which is why they go to America to train the desert. The desert is hotter than Britains hottest days easily. This is stupid.

 • Just looked up average humidity in the UK and I'm not surprised they suffered "heat related illness". I'd personally say that's a lapse in judgment on the instructors parts for not allowing adequate water supplies. I don't know all of the circumstances of the training exercise so I can't confidently say something should change one way or another though.
