As a male, I get where you're coming from but I don't see the relevance in sci-fi of females who are portrayed in a "sex-object" sense.
I mean isn't the point of sci-fi to raise intelligent questions about our current society and the greater moral truths we should seek to attain through avoiding the negative exploration of science and cultivating the positive aspects. To me the whole thing seems like a slip backwards when showing off boobies is made to seem actually relevant. (if you want to talk about Cortana and MC, as hypocritical as it sounds, that is kind of different and we can have that discussion)
Not all women have huge knockers anyway, the argument for why boobs still need to be accentuated at the cost of protection boggles me. I just don't see why such a major/nonsensical differentiation in armor is necessary.

I just don't see why such a major/nonsensical differentiation in armor is necessary.
Well......you see....... when you venture outside your bedroom, past the rectangular panel known as "the front door", you find women. Women are AMAZING creatures, in both mind and body. When you go back inside you experience a debilitating sadness: there are not as many beautiful women inside as there are outside(no, your mom does not count)...but what's this?! An amazing video game that is so good you decide to use "inside-time" to play the game. Problem: still no girls...what can we do to somehow fill in this lost time with some semblance of the outside world while conditions are less then acceptable to venture out? Solution? Add images of that which is awesome outside...not as a replacement but as a placebo for an addict who has witnessed "awesome" and can't wait for his next adventure outside to experience it again. In this downtime, shall we watch a manly female or a sexy female? Any man that has experienced the "awesome" found outside his door waists no time turning up the "sexy heroine volume". Because if one must wait, Has PAID for an awesome video game, and there is an option to see a female, I choose sexy heroine. If in your dreams you prefer a manly female with no curves, more power to you. But I offer you this challenge: put down your controller, unlatch all 9 locks on your bedroom door, kiss your mom goodbye(just for a second you can come right back...sheesh), and step beyond that barrier that is your front door, you too will see the "sexy heroine" light. <prays to "sexy female character gods" for full conversion of newcomer>
Solution? Add images of that which is awesome outside...not as a replacement but as a placebo for an addict who has witnessed "awesome" and can't wait for his next adventure outside to experience it again.
Men who have witnessed "awesome" and the destitute realm and dark, horrid effects of SHD (stupid hottie disorder) know that chicks who have brains are where it's at. Blank-minded pin-ups are a -blam!-ing waste of time. I'm sorry to conflict with you, but seriously, that's your argument for justifying this? That's like saying you prefer romance drivel to great american classics because there isn't enough sex appeal.
In this downtime, shall we watch a manly female or a sexy female? Any man that has experienced the "awesome" found outside his door waists no time turning up the "sexy heroine volume".
It's not so much the transposition of genders, it's the superficial nature of saying "hmm, ah, bigger boobs- bigger asses! That's what will make [whatever] great." Anyway, last time I checked, most female olympians and astrophysicists aren't all buxom and extremely curvy. The female form doesn't need to be heavily exaggerated to be feminine. And the female mind isn't something that needs to be housed within a pinhead or covered up by a less "manly" body to be attractive. So what I'm saying is that art aiming to be progressive/meaningful should focus on equality and focus on the intellectual level by equalizing male and female characters. I get sexuality, everyone loves it, but it shouldn't really be sacrificed for or the core focus and it's a good thing when it's removed to explore character and story. see: Halo 3: ODST. Therefore, in my opinion, even in a video game none of that is important to me. I won't care if it turns out other than exactly what suits me, but I'll definitely wonder about it. <prays to the Grand UFT you don't think I'm arguing just for the sake of arguing>

You clearly didn't accept my challenge.....So at this time, not having witnessed the "awesome", you are still only a book study, left guessing at the possibilities. The female in your game can.....(wait for it)......have both brains and be sexy! I know this conceptualization is foreign to one that has not witnessed the outside world. However, you only limit yourself if you feel you must choose one over the other - choosing a single scoop ice cream cone when 2 scoops are free. I encourage you to take that voyage beyond the rectangular portal. Venture into the habitat of the female! Witness the "Awesome". <prays to the sexy female character gods that they not strike down this lost soul, as he simply needs to experience "awesome">

Edited by hopla: 11/14/2013 5:36:25 AMDear god... What I'm saying is that the (sacrifice for) focus or exploitation of the female physique usually is a means to detract from meaningful story/character elements, not to mention it's highly unrealistic. "Protect those sternums and ta-tas, or maybe we need redesigned spacesuits that accentuate those female buns... decisions, decisions." The question is why is it necessary? I've already stated the reasons why turning the volume down on sexuality makes for a more artful composition. Are you not basically saying it's because you can't go a few hours without being aroused while you're being entertained otherwise? As that video was meant to illustrate, the exploitation of the male form is viewed by most Europeans as perfectly acceptable. To many others, it is laughably ridiculous or uncomfortable and serves a mirroring function as that of its counterpart. Some people don't see the connection between the two at all and rather have it as they like it. Yes, many characters in video games/cinema/television are brainy and curvy but when I play one of those games, watch one of those movies or shows I have the same reaction that I have to many male action hero characters. It makes me laugh. Watch the new Chronicles of Riddick movie and if that doesn't prove my points then... then, well who gives a shit anyway? The best comparable antithesis I can think of right now that flew in the face of bullshit like that was Predators. <prays the sexy female character gods save me the trouble and kill me now>

I think this, once funny debate, has taken a turn in the wrong direction. Allow me to explain sans explicatives: games are not real, they are an opportunity for everyone of us to escape for a few hours to live the life of a random hero. Because of this, there are no limitations to these worlds. Many storyline explanations could be made for including sexy females - future genetics to be one. To be honest it doesn't really matter. It's all just a fantasy. I never once said huge breasts were a must-have, I simply implied "sexy". In other words I don't want females to look like skinny, short males. As for the shape of female armor....REALLY? What do all future-based armors rely on in games these days? Some form of energy shield...physical contact if any is reserved for a single knife to the body or a rifle butt to the back of the head. The shape of armor in the future isn't hinged on barbaric club strikes to the chest. My desire for Destiny females? That we can avoid huge breasts, uni-boob armor, females that look like males. I'd like a shapely female that is clearly female in her armor, an attractive face when I remove her helmet, and if they include voice actresses-a female voice that sounds like a sexy female that could save the universe(ie-fem shepherd). Other then this, I believe this conversation has run its cordial course. It was fun while it lasted, see you in the game!

Edited by hopla: 11/15/2013 6:20:18 AM
games are not real
True buy they certainly don't exist in a vacuum.
Many storyline explanations could be made for including sexy females - future genetics to be one.
Like I said earlier, female olympians are built a certain way for a reason: balance and athleticism. Throw on all the genes you want, you're not going to cheat physics.
I never once said huge breasts were a must-have, I simply implied "sexy".
I think the whole "manly" comment must have thrown me off, because the only reason armored boobs would be well defined or actually noticeable, is if they were huge.
In other words I don't want females to look like skinny, short males.
Can you actually provide a reason as to why that would be bad? I just don't get what the problem is with the difference not being remarkable. They don't need to be noticeably shorter...
As for the shape of female armor....REALLY? What do all future-based armors rely on in games these days? Some form of energy shield...physical contact if any is reserved for a single knife to the body or a rifle butt to the back of the head.
Ablative armor in sci-fi usually requires a substantial power source. Given the bulkiness of Titan suits it doesn't seem like our comprehension of space magic has completely solved the power:weight ratio, on the other hand maybe the power generation aspect has been solved. Therefore, if you want female Hunters wearing lightly armored figure hugging suits, there's realistically a compromise in power generation unless they're wearing a backpack.
The shape of armor in the future isn't hinged on barbaric club strikes to the chest.
Oh, yeah well maybe it depends on individual playstyle.
My desire for Destiny females? That we can avoid huge breasts, uni-boob armor, females that look like males.
I guess we're in agreement on the huge boob area, uni-boob armor would still allow you to differentiate between male and female... and why is a sexy voice necessary? Just like you said it's fantasy, so why does it need to "sexy." Just for reference, how would you describe Cortana's voice acting?
Other then this, I believe this conversation has run its cordial course.
-blam!- you, asshole :). (that's not a period, it's a tear) Sorry if I offended you, I was just trying to offer context. Honestly I think the game will probably have elements of both perspectives. If you watched the video released tonight, though, I think that points to Destiny severely lacking in cleavage department. The Hunter doing the slidetackle in the last few seconds; I'd put money down that it's a female.
It was fun while it lasted, see you in the game!
I'm going to haunt your every step for the rest of your days. Hakuna matata.
