I mostly play it just because it was a big factor in my childhood. Try a game out and see if you like it. I recommend getting a GBA and playing "FireRed" or getting a DSlite and playing "SoulSilver" these are both remakes of older, highly outdated games.

Variety mostly. You can construct a team with whatever you want and you decide type distribution, stat distribution, and move distribution. There will always be new strategies to come up with.
