What would it take to make you a Christian? (non-theists)

The point was raised in HM Rob's thread, in a strange manner that didn't work so well. So here's a direct question for the atheists of Secular Sevens; what would it take for you to become a Christian?

For the actual BASE concepts to be rooted in science, then I might believe. This said, that's a reason why I find it a hell of a lot easier to find truth in Wicca than I do in most other religions. But as Daz said, even if the Judeo-Christian deity existed...I still wouldn't like him and I'd tell him to piss off.

  • Ironically I think the very nature of god might preclude him/her/it from ever being doubtlessly proven to exist (short of forcibly removing doubt from people's minds), so unless there is some way to do it that I wouldn't be aware of, nothing.

In order for me to believe in a deity, I would require verifiable evidence supporting such a discovery that would survive experimentation and the peer review process without being disproven or better explained by some other answer. From there, I would need Christianity's philosophy to change into one that wasn't exclusionary and didn't contradict and/or discourage the use of reason, but in fact promoted it. Finally, I would require a similar level of evidentiary proof showing that Christianity's claims were in fact correct as opposed to any other specific religious claims or just simple deism. So basically I'd only be able to accept the Christian moniker if almost everything about it changed and we could verify that a god did exist. But even then, most likely, I would see no reason to label myself specifically as a Christian - I can only say that I might have turned out to be one in such a world.

    • That's a tough and interesting question, and I'll admit it's hard due to the lack of empirical/testable claims made by Christianity. Even if some guy claimed to be the second coming of Jesus, and performed convincingly supernatural miracles, I don't think this alone would convince me of Christianity. The reason for this being that this event could be caused by Christianity, but it could have other explanation. Maybe no God exists, only Satan does, and this man is the son of Satan who wants to trick us into worshiping him. Or perhaps this man is just some guy who happened to be born with supernatural powers for no reason and he wants to convince us he's the son of God for laughs. These scenarios might seem ridiculous, but I don't see why they should cohere with my preconceived notions any less than Christianity does. The only 'advantage' Christianity has is that a lot of people believe it, but that has little bearing on the truth value of Christianity. As for your question. Perhaps one could, through pure reason prove the existence of a God which is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. Being omnibenevolent is important, since if the God isn't known to be all-good, then it might be an evil deity forcing me to believe it is the Christian God. Once this all-good God is proven to exist, the task is then reduced to proving that this God is, in fact, the Christian God. Maybe you could point to an undeniable example of divine intervention, one which is consistent only with the God of Christianity. If you could execute these two tasks with reasonable rigor, I think you'd have a strong argument in favor of Christianity.

    • Nothing. Why? Christianity is founded in faith. I only believe in hard fact. So, if Jesus were to walk up and prove he was the son of god, I wouldn't have faith, since he would be proven. What marks Christians (all religions, but ITT Christians) is the faith or belief in something they have never seen.

    • I'll need god to literally appear out of nowhere in front of me, strike something with lightning, and disappear in a cloud of locusts. Then maybe.

    • So, if the Christian God is real, does that mean that everything associated with the Christian faith is real, too? Heaven, hell, original sin, etc?

Just a thought, Atheism is embraced by many because they believe the universe is finite. Honestly, if I believed that everything is just going to slowly grow cold and die, I'd go all Joker on everyone.

        • Coherent and consistent logical reasoning that verifies that God exists or needs to exist, and empirical evidence supporting him. I have never been presented with either of these things in my entire life.

        • If the Christian God decided to actually contact me like certain other beings have, i'd be more inclined to believe in him. However, until that happens, or I discover him by other means, I will not. And even if he does turn out to be real, I won't become some hapless slave to him like some choose to be.

        • If there was proof that Christianity was correct, then I'd be a theist. I still wouldn't be Christian though.

              • Erm... What? Even if you proved that god exists (which is impossible even if he did, which he can't...), then surely you must know that, just because god exists, doesn't mean to say that we will adopt religion, right? I personally don't like the teachings of Christianity and their morals. I think that the question you should be asking is what would it take for us to become theists? Not Christians because atheists have already adopted non-Christianity and the existence of God doesn't inherently justify religion even if it does justify theism.
