Edited by Voll: 7/26/2013 1:58:31 PMTweaked a bit my post from other thread... but why not sharing it with the Black Garden? Sorry for the wall of text, but here's my planned Guardian. Any opinions or feedback would be much appreciated! Thank you all for your time. --------- Name: <REDACTED>, a.k.a “Hermit”. Species / Guardian class: Human / Warlock Gender: Male. Age: Between 25 and 28, so close to his thirties. Overview: Hermit is an oddball with a strong sense of honour, which favours diplomacy over brute force. With our Solar System facing imminent war once again, how far will mere words take him? Physical description: He’s a green-eyed, fair-skinned young man. His hair is black but, due to his receding hairline, he resigned himself with a discrete haircut. He sports a beard, usually stroking in while in thought (he’s prone to forget he normally wears a helmet, so it gets stroked too). He shows a scar in his right eyebrow, which has accompanied him since birth. Years ago, Hermit was quite skinny, but being infused with some of the Traveler’s powers and the extensive training at the Tower has made up for it. As of today, he’s fit enough to face the average tasks of a Guardian. Aesthetics: In terms of clothing, he usually favours subtle colours such as brown, blue and coal. With plenty of pockets and unrestricted movement, the warlock trench coat gets the job done. The only part of Hermit’s equipment which stands out is his helmet, coloured in yellow/golden tones. Weapon of choice: Hand cannons such as the Duke Mk. 44, and how could I forget the space magic? Lifestyle: When in trouble, he prefers to resolve disputes without resorting to battle, which he isn’t half bad at it either –he just chooses not to do so–. Hermit is also an avid explorer, lead by his curiosity and the burning desire of learn more. In his search for artefacts of lost knowledge, he won’t rest until every bit and cranny of an area has been explored. Personality: Hermit could be described as “creative, steadfast, modest and a little odd”; he’s cynical, yet wise beyond his years. His humble and soft-spoken demeanour often belies his Warlock prowess. He prefers diplomacy rather than intimidation to solve problems, measuring carefully the options before leaping into action. Sometimes, this gets mistaken for cowardice, much to his dismay. He’s polite and social with everyone, especially with strangers. Nonetheless, he appreciates solitude. Every now and then he feels the need to get some distance from his colleagues; withdrawing into himself to focus and ponder about his endeavours, inner thoughts, and other philosophical matters. In time, that –and his thoughtful approach to life– would end up earning him the moniker of “Hermit”. While comfortable on a team, he values being independent; a trait that shows up both inside and outside the battlefield. He’s also known to be an accomplished storyteller, often attending meetings in the Tower where children listen to his experiences as a Guardian of the City. Sometimes, Hermit twists these anecdotes into horror stories, frightening the children for his own amusement. Lastly, though he has vertigo and usually complains a lot during flights, he is considered a fairly skilled pilot. Talents: He’s dexterous with “space magic” as much as he is with words. He can a valuable asset when negotiating, thanks to his soft demeanour and seeing the whole picture in a conflict instead of focus in the parts. He’s also quite creative –even in battle–, being able to find new and unexpected solutions to harsh situations; but he doesn’t like boasting about it. Weaknesses: Despite his proficiency on social interaction on a superficial level, Hermit has a hard time connecting with others on a deep, personal level. Also, he often feels “out of place” around people, resulting on a limited pool of friends and comrades, and several difficulties trusting them, especially in battle. Likes: Books, space magic, cooking, writing, being alone, chatting and drinking fruit juice or coffee. Dislikes: Shame, regret, unnecessary violence, his Ghost, simple-mindedness, unsolved secrets and heights. Notable relationships: Coming soon. Motivations and goals: in the short term? He’s determined to keep studying the Traveler, in hopes of unravelling its mysteries and, of course, trying to keep the inhabitants of the Last City safe. In the long term, he dreams of leaving Earth in a quest for learning more about mankind’s downfall and finding a plausible explanation to our Golden Age’s abrupt ending. Recent history Son of a humble couple of residents in the Last City, Hermit could trace his lineage back to Mars, when mankind ruled the Solar System. Labelled a “weirdo” since the first day at school, he was always alone, isolated; the perfect victim of humiliation and bullying by his classmates, experiences that forged some of the hermit-like traits that would follow him through adulthood. He found some comfort by admiring the ever-watchful Traveler, above the City. Actually, he thought they were very similar one another: both alone, with an uncertain, yet important purpose in life. Hermit began to idolise the beautiful sphere, gazing night after night at it like a wondrous entity; the mere sight of it was enough to ignite his already vast imagination. The Traveler was like the friend he never had, filling the lonely moments of the poor boy with a silent dialogue, one that would last for years. In Hermit’s coming of age, his mother –aware of her son’s fascination– encouraged him to apply for a position in the Traveler’s research team. He studied hard and, after graduating with high honours, passed the membership tests without problems. However, the young man’s dreams had grown as much as he did, so he ended up applying for a different program. In that crew, they weren’t simply studying the Traveler; they were trying to bond with it. After extensive investigation, some of the Traveler’s properties started to rub off on him: levitation, a sudden energy blast from his hands… he thought it was science’s answer to “magic”, yet that was no fairy tale. He felt born anew: a Warlock, they called him. From that day on, every time Hermit gazed upon the colossal body up in the sky, he felt alone no more. He was closer to his friend than ever before; its energy pulsating deep within… like a second heartbeat. How does Hermit react when… He finds a powerful weapon? “Look at this perfectly crafted tool of war…” He finds a coin purse? “Someone will need it more than I do.” He finds food or edible products? “How about checking the expiration date first?” He finds a trap? “I will not fall on this trap –sigh– not again.” He finds a corpse? “… memento mori.” He finds a suspicious machine? “I don’t know if I should tamper with this one…”
