Why all the hate on QTE's?

(For the unknowning QTE means quick time event. I.E. button appears on screen, you press button) Whether on B.net or elsewhere, it seems that there is a growing trend. More and more gamers are beginning to hate quick time events. My first experience with the QTE was in Shenmue for the Dreamcast and I've played countless games that include QTE. I, personally, have never had a problem with them. In most cases, the QTE helps with the story telling. My question is why do people hate QTE so much now?

  • Quick Time Events can be a powerful tool, especially when there is verisimilitude with the actions you are asked to use. But like any tool, if it is overused or used improperly, it can easily break immersion and make the game bland. Nobody wants to press random buttons while watching a cinematic.

  • I always thought God of War pulled them off pretty well.

  • Unless you're 5 years old QTEs require no extraordinary skills and they break up gameplay at bad times in most cases. Mass Effects 2 and 3 were the only games with QTEs (Paragon/Renegade Interrupts) that I feel did it right, because they weren't necessary to the progression of the story, but changed dialogue in meaningful ways in most cases and there was no break in the gameplay because they all occurred during cutscenes and conversations, which is when most people tune out so these were a way to keep people interested.

  • Tomb raider series did it well Resi 4 did it well Most cases its just annoying when its over done, it should be spontaneous, not repetitive

  • It depends on how it's done. AC3, wolfs catching you off guard and you have to dodge, good. Hitman Absolution, the off chance you enter direct hand to hand combat, sure it works. Ryse, quicktime at every enemy? No. It all depends on implementation.

    • If used very lightly, I like them. Like in Gears of War and that one scene in Halo 4. Those are ok scenarios. But when a game like Ryse comes up where it's literally playing the game for you...just...no. I want to actually play my game, thank you very much.

      • when done properly they are great when they aren't they are terrible and bring you out of the game quite a lot.

      • Press X to win the game There are only a few QTE games that are really enjoyable like Heavy Rain. QTE's are boring but a good story can overcome it. IMO.

      • The problem with a lot of QTEs is that they amount to nothing more than "Press X to not die."

      • I dislike QTEs when they are excessive. I can take them in small doses.
