Not all games need to be fun!

That is not me saying that. That is the latest episode of Extra Credits. A very intelligent and insightful look into the understanding of this art. This week they talk about why all games do not have to be fun. I agree with it! If all games were fun, then Spec Ops The Line, and The Last of Us (while it was fun) would not really be here in a since. Spec Ops is a game where it shows you that real life war and conflict is NOT fun and is downright haunting. Now, imaging the White Phosphorus scene being depicted as "FUN".

  • I think this video is strangely disconnected from the industry, and the perception of games held by gamers.

  • Honestly, I found that video to be highly stupid. Extra Credit either just does not get what people mean when they're talking about a game being fun or is getting way too bogged down in the actual meaning of the word rather than what people mean when they're using it. Games are ranked as "fun" when people find them enjoyable, it's not about making every single game something crazy or zany like Mario Kart, it's about what people find to enjoy in the game....and enjoyment goes for all types of games. Even the most depressing, tragic, or horrifying story can still be enjoyable, and that is exactly what people mean when they're talking about something being fun or not, whether they enjoy it. If a game is not engaging or keeping it's players interested in the story or the gameplay, if the players are not emotionally invested in any of it, then it's not something that they find fun. And something being "fun" does not exclude horrifying or depressing things happening in it. Black Ops for instance, overall a fun game, yet filled with all kinds of horrifying events happening in it. The goal of a game is to keep your audience interested, engaged, and involved with what you're trying to sell them, if you fail at those, the audience is not going to find any fun in that game and not play or buy it.

    • But doesn't having a good story make it fun?

    • I think there are mixed definitions of 'fun'. For something to be fun, it doesn't have to be colorful and joyous with fast gameplay. For me, a game with great scriptwriting and beautiful worlds is fun. It doesn't have to be like a roller coaster to be fun. Things like 'A Beautiful Mind', 'Grave of the Fireflies', etc, though they are not happy, they are fun to watch. Basically, the reason I wrote this is because people have different definitions of fun, as is apparent in the comments. Your example, 'The Last of Us', is not a colorful, happy, game, but it's one you want to return to because it's, by one definition, fun (something you get enjoyment out of).

    • Videogames don't have to be fun, they have to be entertaining. Look at The Walking Dead. Almost all you do is talk, but it's still a phenomenal title.

    • I get what he means... I think. I think he's trying to say that a game doesn't have to be fun, it just has to keep you interested so that you will be able to play it. Kinda like how people watch scary/sad/romance movies.

    • Games are suppose to be fun that's why there called games. If there not fun there they shouldn't be called games because your suppose to enjoy games, hence the name "games".- That's why arma is called a sim because its not always meant to be fun I mean you should see the way people play sometimes its like they die in real life.

      • Fun in war games is not having to face what you have done. That's why Spec Ops was ingenious.
