Nintendo needs to market to adults

This is not an attack on Nintendo; in fact, they're my favorite of the Big Three. The problem is that all of their games treat you like a child. You can't get through the first quarter of any of their first-party games without stopping seemingly every few minutes for the 'guide' character to explain what is in this particular room, how to use your weapons or tools, why the bad guys are bad, etc. They just assume that you have no idea what you're doing. Now, I'm not suggesting that they make it a Dark Souls-esque game where they just throw you in and let you die dozens of times just to figure out how to win, but this crap needs to stop. I just started playing Skyward Sword last night and had to walk away from the game because I got fed up with their annoying gibberish dialog, insufferably childish characters, and being told what to do and where to go literally every time I entered a new room. This type of handholding is not conducive to gaming and makes it impossible (and meaningless) to explore. So yeah, that's it. I want to see Nintendo games that don't treat me like a baby.

  • You realize that Nintendo makes games for kids right? They aren't hand holding for you but for your little siblings. I enjoy that Nintendo keeps the way they have always been. They are the last company left not trying to appeal to the hardcore audience and cinematic games and such. They see themselves as a Toy Company. They want that appeal and I don't mind it as a matter of fact I love it.

    • Hmm... Nintendo is sort of like the Disney of the gaming world, I mean if you see a Disney branded film you know you aren't going for a complex, thrill-ride classic that will remembered for all of time, you're going because you have kids or young relatives that will enjoy it and it's just amusing enough to adults to stop their brains imploding, you won't find much more than that but you know that when you go to watch it. Likewise, if you pick up Mario or Zelda, you know you're going to get a fairly simple "Good triumphs over evil" story that, let's be honest, you've probably already played before, however, you know this when you start playing, so you nod your way through, enjoying the mild to moderate challenge to quench your own nostalgia and introduce any younger players to the medium without resorting to Sesame Street Kinect games... So, I wouldn't say they need a change in marketing because they freely admit to their purpose, position and vision, it's what they've been doing for decades and I'm pretty sure they're okay with sticking with it.

    • A Link Between Worlds? Super Mario 3D World? I know where you're coming from (Skyward Sword is atrocious for hand holding) but Nintendo has acknowledged and shown they've learned from being overbearing.

      • Probably won't happen. Nintendo is a very unique platform. They have by far the most impressive first-party lineup of games out of all the consoles, and that lineup has made them tons of success over the decades. They probably won't try to appeal to a broader more "adult" audience because they know they don't need to in order to be successful. Besides, isn't it nice that at least one platform's first party lineup isn't ALL white guys in their 20s with five O'clock shadow and a gun in their hand?

        • nintendo needs real videogames, not simple interactives games, how Michael Pachter says, why buy a nintendo console without GTA5, COD Ghost, Destiny, FIFA?

          • You know what franchise is not geared towards younger players? Metroid. You know what franchise doesn't hold the player's hand hardly at all? METROID. You know what franchise would show off every ounce of the Wii U's power and finally sell the system? METROID! Another E3 come and gone and not a hint at what they're doing with Metroid. I don't know what they're thinking.

            • They should at the very least give a skip tutorial option since their games are enjoyable by at least one demographic that isn't a young child. That said, they also could stand to diversify their IPs. They don't have anything that caters to hardcore gamers by design.

              • It's long been stated by many people that that sort of hand-holding makes it seem like most gamers at large are incompetent and incapable of rational thinking. Most of Nintendo's customers are young i would presume, but that's usually always been their target audience, the reason we have so many different gaming companies is because of competition, differing opinions, and target markets. Asking Nintendo to stop gearing their games towards younger audiences is like asking Gamefreak to stop making Pokemon games because the generations have already grown up and the current one isn't worth the effort.

              • Nintedo markets to the adults that played their ganes way back when. That is one of the reasons I don't really want a Wii U.

              • hmmm, I wonder if adults buy Nintendo for their kids. Couldn't it be argued that Nintendo is the only company that markets to adults and families? Were as "Adult Games" are really just marketed to one audience the male teen/college kids? Like this, sure I wanna play Hostel part 8 with my manly adultness, but my wife, kids, mom, aunt, dad, whomever... probably just want to race mario carts and shit. Funny how adult rated things are really for males ages 13-35 and really not many other demographics.

                • Skyward Sword is horrible in this regard, however, most of there stuff really doesn't do the hand holding so much. I do feel their online systems and setups really do feel like they're treating you like a child, but as long as it works, what do I care?

                      • I love the cartoon you posted along with this! I think you are right tho, it has always been in the back of my mind to eventually purchase a wii console to play all of the newer versions of games like Mario and donkey kong. The only problem is I think half of the Nintendo population that grew up playing these games is currently about the age where CoD, Halo, and the like sound more appealing

                        • Most games are on rails handholders these days, Nintendo just does it with cartoony graphics. What Nintendo really needs to do for their marketing is something it's already too late for, separate the WiiU from the Wii as much as possible to make it clear that it is the next step in Nintendo consoles. Instead to the public it came off as the Wii 1.5, and sold poorly. What's in a name? Image, and image is everything.

                        • Man, I was just thinking they need to make an M for Mature Zelda. I'm replaying through TP, and it was so nice to not be treated like an 8 year old for once...it'd be nice if there was a "I know what I'm doing" option at the start of the game.

I think Nintendo should continue what they have been doing. They didn't make all that money chasing trends. Plus all games treat you like an idiot since they've done away with instruction manuals.
