Mike Huckabee says churches should give up tax exempt status
In a surprising move, Christian conservative and Republican leader Mike Huckabee is encouraging churches to give up their tax exempt status. Huckabee issued the following call for churches to unilaterally give up their tax-exempt status via Twitter on June 11: "It's time for churches to reject tax exempt status completely; freedom is more important than government financial favors," tweeted Huckabee. Huckabee first suggested that Christians “give up tax-exempt status and tax deductions for charitable contributions” on June 10, while speaking at the pastors’ conference prior to the annual Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Houston. There Huckabee said: "I think we need to recognize that it may be time to quit worrying so much about the tax code and start thinking more about the truth of the living God, and if it means that we give up tax-exempt status and tax deductions for charitable contributions, I choose freedom more than I choose a deduction that the government gives me permission to say what God wants me to say." While Huckabee worries that tax breaks from the government places restrictions on political speech, many secular Americans will welcome Huckabee’s suggestion for the simple reason that the disparity of treatment between religious and secular non-profit organizations has always had the appearance of being unconstitutional. For many, the fact that the government currently gives preference to religious groups over non-religious groups and that tax codes treat churches differently from other non-profit groups, is simply unconstitutional. For many Americans, exempting religious organizations from paying taxes is a clear case of our government "respecting an establishment of religion," precisely what the framers intended to prohibit in the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The United States Constitution states,"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." What do you think about Huckabee’s suggestion? Should churches reject their tax exempt status? Are tax breaks for churches a good idea? Are they even constitutional? Leave a comment - express yourself.
Well, this is interesting.

  • That's easy for a millionare like him to say who probably attends a mega Church that makes more money in a week than most people make in a year. But, I for one oppose this. Many Churches are nearly broke and can barely pay for their property, let alone pay taxes. I'd rather Churches give up their right to get involved in politics for tax exempt status.

  • Double edged sword. However, I'm more in support for this. While if the tax-exemption is taken away, that leaves the church to do whatever the hell it wants. But, because of the Separation of Church and State, they can't really do anything politically.

    • Hold on a minute here.
While Huckabee worries that tax breaks from the government places restrictions on political speech
Due to their tax-exemption, they can neither endorse or oppose certain candidates in an election. With this tax exemption taken away, a church can endorse any candidate that they so choose. This would lead to another source of funding for politicians. I knew there was something fishy with this.
Never take a politicians word for face value. Always check who benefits from every action.
• I mean that's probably a good way to diminish the wages of an already low salary job and actually close some churches because they struggle all the time to get enough tithes and donations.

      •
tax codes treat churches differently from other non-profit groups
Can someone explain this? I was not aware that religious and secular NPO's are treated differently. In addition, I don't understand Huckabee's statement that accepting tax exemption inhibits freedom.

        • Tell me again what's wrong with exempting churches from taxes?

          • That is, indeed, interesting. I do think churches should give them up, and I think that any churches that choose not to give up their tax-exempt status should have it forcibly revoked as soon as possible.

          • I entirely support such a decision.
