Even if this isn't a real MS employee, everything he says is true.
>The thing is we suck at telling the story. The whole point of the DRM switch from disc based to cloud based is to kill disc swapping, scratched discs, bringing discs to friends house, trade-ins for shit value with nothign going back to developers, and high game costs. If you want games cheaper then 59.99, you have to limit used games somehow. Steam's model requires a limited used game model.
>The thing is, the DRM is really really similar to steam... You can login anywhere and play your games, anyone in your house can play with the family xbox. The only diff is steam you have to sign in before playing, and Xbox does it automatically at night for you (once per 24 hours)
>It's a long tail strategy, just like steam. Steam had it's growing pains at the beginning with all it's drm shit as well. [...] For digital downloads steam had no real competition at the time, they were competing against boxed sales. At the time people were pretty irate about steam, (on 4chan too...) It was only once they had a digital marketplace with DRM that was locked down to prevent sharing that they could do super discounted shit.
>Think about it, on steam you get a game for the true cost of the game, 5$-30$. On a console you have to pay for that PLUS any additional licenses for when you sell / trade / borrow / etc. If the developer / publisher can't get it on additional licenses (like steam), then they charge the first person more. [...] If we say "Hey publishers, you limit game to 39.99, we ensure every license transfer you get 10$, gamestop gets 20$" that is a decent model... Microsoft gets a license fee on first and subsequent game purchases, compared to just first now? That's a revenue increase.
>Competition is the best man, it helps drive both to new heights. See technology from the Cold War. If we had no USSR, we'd be way worse off today. TLDR: Bring it on Steam :)

>Yeah we passed that around the office at Xbox. Most of us were like "Well played Sony, Well played". That being said they are just riding the hype train of ZOMG THEY ARE TRYING TO -blam!- US FOR NO REASON. Without actually thinking about how convienent it would be for the majority of the time to not find that disc your brother didn't put back... [...] just simpleminded people not seeing the bigger picture. Some PS4 viral team made them all "U TOOK R DISCS" and they hiveminded.
>Everyone and their mother complains about how gamestop -blam!-s them on their trade ins, getting 5$ for their used games. We come in trying to find a way to take money out of gamestop, and put some in developers and get you possibly cheaper games and everyone bitches at MS. Well, if you want the @#$@ing from Gamestop, go play PS4.
>The goal is to move to digital downloads, but Gamestop, Walmart, Target, Amazon are KIND OF -blam!-ING ENTRENCHED in the industry. They have a lot of power, and the shift has to be gradual. Long term goal is steam for consoles. [...] If you always want to stay with what you have, then keep current consoles, or a PS4. We're TRYING to move the industry forwards towards digital distribution... it'sa bumpy road
>Publishers have enourmous power. Microsoft is trying to balance between consumer delight, and publisher wishes. If we cave to far in either direction you have a non-starting product. WiiU goes too far to consumer, you have no 3rd party support to shake a stick at. PS4 is status-quo. XB1 is trying to push some things, at the expense of others. We have a vision, we'll see if it works in the coming years
>Living room transformation. We want to own the living room. Every living room TV with an XBox on input one. It's the thing that gives the signal to your TV, everything is secondary. The future, where games, TV, internet telephony, all that shit happens magically on some huge ass screen with hand / voice gestures... That's our goal.
3/4
>Google TV + PS4 + Minority report level gestures, that combined with a sick second screen experience (which is really hot for TV, I know I know.. tv tv tv tv tv... but it's -blam!-ing sick when you have it). Games will be the same, there are more exclusives to MS then PS atm, and Kinect 2 makes Kinect 1 look like a childs toy.
>By default it's on, listening for "Xbox On". You can turn it off tho, and turn the console like OFF off. OFF off is required for Germany / other countries that require it (no vampire appliances) [...] It has to be plugged in for the console to post. You can turn off everything it does from the settings. Think of it like airplane mode for the iPhone. You can't just unplug the cellular radio, but you can turn it off.
>Instead of 10mins, is 24hrs for your console, and 1 or 2 at a friends house. Really the majority of people have a speck of internet at least once a day. And if you don't. Don't buy an Xbox 1. Just like if you didn't have a broadband connection don't get Live, and if you don't have an HDTV the 360 isn't that great for you either. New tech, new req. This allows us to do cool shit when we can assume things like you have a kinect, you have internet, etc.
>Current plan is basically you're -blam!-ed after 24 hours. Yeah... I know. Kind of sucks. I believe they will probably revist the time period and / or find a diff way to "call in" to ensure you haven't sold your license to gamestop or something... but there is no plan YET. I'm hoping the change it, but I don't work on that so I don't have much influence there /sigh
>If the power goes out you ain't playing shit. I'm assuming you mean the internet goes out but you have power for TV and Xbox. Yes, You're -blam!-ed for single player games. Again, that's the PoR (Plan of record), but I expect it to change after the e3 cluster-blam!-
>What fee? There is no fee to play your games at your friends house. Never has, never will. Even x360 digital downloads could do that.
4/4
>The cloud capabilities is the shit they like the most. We basically made a huge cloud compute shit and made it free. What people are doing with it is kind of cool. THe original intention was to get all the Multiplayer servers not requiring 3rd party costs (Like EA shutting down game servers to cut costs), as well as taking all the games that servers hosted by the clients (Halo, etc), and have all that compute done in the cloud allowing more CPU cycles for gameplay. That will really expand what developers can do. Anything that doesn't need per frame calculation and can handle 100ms delays can be shifted to the cloud. That's huge.
>SmartGlass + IE is going to be pretty freaking sweet. 1 finger cursor, 2 finger direct manip. Basically if you think of a laptop trackpad where your phone/ slate is the trackpad and the monitor is your TV... it's that. The tech is there, just needs to be applied. There is some really cool shit going on with Petra + controllers that pairs people with controllers. So if person with controller two trades controlers with controller 1, their profiles magically switch. It's sick. What does this matter? Now if you lean left/right it knows which person is leaning, even if 4 people are all int he same room. It's awesome.
>New service using Azure for cloud compute. Allows developers to not use clients for hosting multiplayer servers, or other tasks that do not require per frame calcuations. It's pretty sweet.
>Honestly, if you care about anything other then pure games AT ALL. Xbox 1 > PS4. If all you do is play games, and nothing else, PS4.
This was all from the Microsoft engineer that was on /b/ last night.
>It's not worth my time to prove it, or risk my Job. I work in Studio A, 40th ave in Redmond, Wa. The thai place in the studio cafeteria has double punch wednesdays. Go ahead and call them and verify if you want.
MS is seen as the bad guy for trying to "force" the game industry to move forward. They're doing us a favor.
"They're the company we need, not necessarily the one we deserve."

I like many over reacted at first. I think I let articles tell me about it, which are extremely biased depending on their parent corporation's goals. But once it was broken down and explained it sounded so good. Shortly after that M$ announced it a little poorly at E3 and pressure mounted swiftly. But it seems like they did a poor job telling people. But again maybe I just read the wrong articles detailing the release of info rather than the source of info. But they were trying to help. And do something new. People don't like new. Even when complaining in full about the current. They just prefer keeping a familiar hatred around! Even after the reversal, if Internet goes down. There is very little that can be done. Nearly every game is online only. And a lot of single player games I've had still requires hitting their server first. I do love the part about GameStop. 'Wahhhhhh only $5 for this used game' 'WHAT!!? I CANT SELL MY USED GAMES!!!?' Still would have won with less $ per game in the end. And less publisher control. But that's why it was squashed. They have a right hold on the ones reporting the industry.
-
I have been tell people this shit for years.
-
i went for the ps4 i want a games console not a multimedia betamax player
-
I jumped aboard the "Screw Xbox" train because I had no internet where I lived, now I have internet, and I really wish they'd go back to their original idea. PS4 is cool but it's just gaming. Xbox will be so much more, if they could do it. Sony is just holding it back

Edited by thefourfoldroot: 10/18/2015 2:24:00 PMEdit: nvm. This is from years ago. Ignore and let die. That's a very interesting bunch of things we already know. Ms wanted to do things like digital only (eventually), always online, no disc swapping...people didn't want it. This guy agrees DRM crap and 24 hr check in would have had to change as nobody wanted it. His justification: new business model would have been like steam so it COULD have led to cheaper games as publishers wouldn't have lost out to second hand trades or people lending discs to friends...excuse me if I don't trust Microsoft and publishers to pass on savings!!! The extra money would have gone to their profit with minimal savings passed to consumers. No thanks

What's the problem with moving forward? Isn't that what the industry is expected to do?
-
Not for me, it has let me down, the more people try to defend or clarify xbone, the more it makes it look desperate to get my attention and it even gets it worse.
-
Yes but if consoles become too much like PCs then y not just get a PC?
-
Well... I was actually hoping Microsoft was going to stick with the original plans for the Xbox One. Too bad, we could have had a real summer sale.
-
why did people ruin this
-
im following you for that, if you find some more stuff post it id love to learn more! great find!
-
Implementing useless features isnt pushing the industry forward, its just stagnating it.
-
Honestly, I think the worst part about the next Xbox is Microsoft's awful attempts at making it sound good.
-
Edited by Thoth: 6/15/2013 5:35:59 PMYou can have innovation and move the industry forward without all the crap. Why not have the game authenticate via internet or, if that is not available, off the game disc itself? Why not make the kinect an optional addition instead of required? For games that require cloud computing or online interaction, the online requirement should just apply for that game. Example: Destiny. It makes sense for Destiny to require internet because of how it is designed. You can have features without all the baggage.
-
The problem is, MS is making a lot of this futureproofing shit mandatory. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was all optional, it would be an awesome way to shift into the future of gaming and entertainment. But this is less a shift and more a violent shunt.

Edited by iGraviton: 6/15/2013 8:45:49 PMPersonally, I think Microsoft is going to lose this generation's console war. Why? Because the PS4 is what gamers WANT, not what they need. There is a large group of ignorant gamers who are going to buy the PS4, solely because of all the "Sony won E3" videos on YouTube, and the outrage over all of Microsofts new policies, which quite frankly very few people actually understand. I myself will be purchasing a PS4 before an Xbox One. However, my decision lies in the games, not the consoles. Now, is it a bad thing that Microsoft will lose this console war? Not necessarily. Xbox is setting themselves up for success. The policies they're adopting have been common practice in PC gaming for a long time, and the features they've added are where media is heading. This is extremely helpful for Microsoft for a few reasons. In my opinion, this is going to be the last console generation, or at least in the capacity that we know them. Consoles are getting more and more like PC's every year, so eventually they're going to merge into the same thing. This is apparent in the similar architecture and function of te Xbox One and most modern PC's. By addressing the issues that PC gaming presents NOW, they'll be able to focus more resources towards creating new content and revolutionizing gaming in its entirety a few years down the line. The second reason is that they're also addressing what I like to call the Media Singularity. A few years down the line, not too far from now, all of our various media outlets are going to be condensed into one machine; which is exactly what the Xbox One is doing. What they'll learn during the lifespan of the Xbox One will be invaluable during the development of whatever Microsoft's next machine is. So all-in-all, yes, RIGHT NOW, the PS4 appears the best option for gamers. However, Microsoft is thinking decades ahead, and is only setting themselves up for success in the future.
Really the majority of people have a speck of internet at least once a day. And if you don't. Don't buy an Xbox 1. Just like if you didn't have a broadband connection don't get Live.
Thank you. I won't. I don't need you telling me where to sell my games. If I want to get ripped of by Gamestop I will. That's the power and craziness of democracy. Don't limit my freedoms or think for me. I don't want or need you coddling me.
-
Don't care, I like being the owner of a game I purchased, so PS4 for me. I don't want to have to ask Papa Microsoft for permission to play a game I spent money on. If I own a disc, I should be able to play that game. The fact that discs on the Xbox One mean diddly squat really irritates me. And I still don't even understand the 24-hour check in. Does Papa Microsoft need to make sure you're not off pirating games or something? Sheesh.
-
Complete nonsense. This is not progress.
-
Yes, this is progress, but in the wrong direction. The Xbone is a horrible piece of Hardware, and whoever conjured up its features shouldn't be in the industry. This is a bullet in the foot for Microsoft, and it is completely and utterly their fault, and they deserve it.
-
I look forward to next year's E3 when we completely abandon the pretense of holding the industry to any sort of standard and we simply support whichever company that isn't quite as bad/dickish/incompetent as the other(s). We already have it in our presidential elections - why not in the entertainment industry too? Xbox is the future? No, the future is mediocrity disguised as innovation. (So in retrospect I guess Xbox is the future : / ).
-
I love how all it takes is a wall of text by a public relations person to try to use buzzwords and tactics to make it seem not as bad and Xbots rave as if anything has changed. You can swing your motives and features all you want to sound good in your favor, it doesn't make it good.
-
I think people are far to quick to judge, I honestly don't understand where the PS4 bandwagon is coming from. I see far less things that are good with the PS4 than with the Xbox One. It seems as though the ONE thing that is hurting Microsoft's popularity is its new policy changes. I honestly don't care for them as some seem to do, but I do understand the cons about it. Xbox also has the online feature on point, focusing on that is one of the best things they could have done in my opinion. I have played both consoles all my life (save the PS3) and I even enjoyed the PS2 more than the Xbox, but the Xbox 360 and soon to be Xbox One are my true winners.
-
What I would like to be seen done is make it so that there is no physical disc, and that you buy online. Or buy a disc, install it, and then throw it away. But there should be an option to pay, say, 10$ to try a game for 5 days (digitally) and then if you wish to buy the full game, buy the full game but subtract the rent fee. If they did this I would be buying Xbox One. But I'm not and I'm excited to be heading back over to the PS, I was sad to leave PS2, and I'm sad to leave Xbox 360, but the exclusives (aside from Halo) aren't doing it for me.
