Hello all,
I am majoring in Statistics and Applied Mathematics and will be getting a Masters in Statistics. I'm trying to brain storm jobs and am leaning towards a sports type thing. But what would a statistical degree get me in the world of gaming? I'm sure gaming industries need statistics ran!

There was an episode of the Bungie Podcast which features a math savant, who discussed the importance of math on his work with Bungie Pro, and in the matchmaking engine they built for Reach. Statistics played a huge part in how the system determined who should host a matchmaking game, as well as inside the predictive algorithms used during matchmaking sessions to reduce lag debt... Statistics could potentially touch a large portion of a game in some fashion or another :)

For what it's worth, as a tester I lament that I didn't pay more attention in stats classes.

There's definitely User Research. A lot of game design is about gathering information from playtests and focus groups and being able to make conclusions about your data and present those conclusions to your team. Yeah, it's definitely possible. GO FOR IT!

Edited by Crawley: 6/9/2013 12:32:03 AMYou could always do what my stats teacher did and teach statistics. Edit: unless you actually want to be a teacher, which would be cool, this is negative and I apologize. Follow your dreams.
