Destiny Always On?

There's been some talk that Destiny will need to be always online. For someone such as myself that has no Internet or struggles to get a connection that is a real bummer. I want to enjoy the story of this amazing game and I know that I will not be able to enjoy a lot of things that online users will enjoy but I think its a little unfair that I won't be able to play the game at all if the always online rumors are true. What are some thoughts of this?

  • It said specifically in the Vidoc or trailer thingy, you can choose to play with your friends, or to play Solo. All you will be misssng out on is matchmaking, and the game will be much more difficult for you to play.

    • Bungie is pretty good about looking out for its community. I think it's safe to say there will be content you'll be able to take advantage of, just like with the Halo games. You'll miss out on the online stuff, but I sincerely doubt Bungie would leave it's offline people out in the dust. They're good folks.

        •
There's been some talk that Destiny will need to be always online.
Just some? More like all... Bungie has been very direct about it being always online.
...if the always online rumors are true.
Definitely not rumor. It's 100% true. Not all games are going to be for you. Either accept that or change your situation.

        • As far as your situation, you may be able to play the game albeit in a limited capacity with a free account: only being able to play in private areas co-op with a fireteam you've invited, no path crossing with larger population, no PvP multiplayer etc. Now that doesn't address not having home internet at all, but given as it's cheaper than having a phone data plan I kinda have to wonder why you've prioritized having internet access on your phone given that you could just get a bare-bones "dumb" phone and basic calling plan and spend the savings on the glory that is the entire internet. Do you not have a computer either? smh

          • With all due respect OP and this is not focused on you but i'll make use of your thread to try and explain some things. Destiny was announced 3 months ago and there's still a lot of people asking for an offline mode... my "problem" are not the threads people make but the reason why people don't understand what an ONLINE GAME means! Sure, i know you want a offline mode because you're used to play HALO single player campaign. That's fine and i understand... but Bungie wants to make an online only game so there's nothing we can do about it. So i'm sorry if you can't enjoy the game because you and others don't have an internet connection, but the same happens to others with other games like MMO's. This is an ONLINE GAME that was designed to require an internet connection to play it since day ONE, just like Star Wars: The Old Republic, World Of Warcraft, Defiance, etc. It's a persistent online world where all sort of things happen even when you're not logged in. Basically, it's a living breathing world! Anyone who played MMO's before understands the concept and when done well it's amazing to play. So having a offline mode in this game would not work, because the game isn't designed to work like single player games. So no the game can't be played offline because the AI, path-finding, matchmaking, all the activities in-game and all sorts of other stuff are done/processed on the server side. People will be playing Destiny on a CLIENT that basically the only thing it does is render the game and send/receive information to/from the server. I'll repeat, the game doesn't have an offline mode like HALO. Still i hope you'll be able to play the game, because if Bungie manages to design great worlds, gameplay and create a good story... you're in for a treat!

          • I'm in the same boat so I feel you. But.... I plan to have Internet before it comes out. I get it man stuff happens. My situation for example is that while I should be an adult and have a steady job, I've had some medical problems and its hard to keep a job. Livin with ma right now and since I was livin on my own for a while I've come home to some funny things. Ma was paying for Internet cable package. But it never works and Instead of makin the company fix it she paid for it for six months and Then decided she couldn't afford it anymore and just shut it off and got a smart phone family plan. Lol can't really complain since she's helping me out but it obviously makes no sense

          • and for as for sleepers comment its a good debate but I think you went into too much detail it sounded like you were kind of trashing the idea of somebody not having internet so when it comes to people that don't have internet I say that you are really out numbered in that department. just saying ^^ sometimes we have to stick up for other players who are in the same boat.

          • yeah I'm with be a starter of the threat I don't have an internet connection because I don't have enough money so I'm hoping there is an offline play since rumor has it they're trying to change with the overcoming complaints about the always on connection. but as the rumors go the always on is debatable.

          • How do you not have the internet in 2013? And unless your on and iPhone you couldn't post to the forums. So how did you post this if you have no internet?

            • It isn't a rumor, it is confirmed that you will need to be connected to the internet to play the game.

              • It's a game that's going to be constantly changing similar to (but they refuse to call it one) an MMO. So they'd like you to be connected to receive said changes and always be up to date. That may not be how you want to play it but that's how they want it to be played I suppose. Which you should really look into that internet thing because from what I've heard about the next Gen consoles, they'll need you to be connected to the internet at least once every 24 hours for updates.

I agree. I understand the benefits, its possible the world isn't even on the disk and we have to access it from their servers allowing for expansion and larger worlds possible than on disk. They could seamlessly add content (although so few studios would give content away for free). There are plenty of options with such an architecture, but I agree, always online games are pretty unforgiving for people without internet, or people with spotty internet. I am pretty sure they've explicitly stated its always online, but I could be wrong. I am curious what happens if you have an Xbox live silver account. You can connect and access many of Xbox Live's features, but you can't connect to other people. Does that mean we can play Destiny, but it will be empty???

                  • Not to sound like an jackass but why should this be Bungies problem/fault. Destiny will be an every changing world and you kind of need an internet access to get the latest updates and patches for that to work out. Even more so if you are going to be parties which Bungie has put a very big emphases on.
