Is speeding on an empty road irresponsible?

Before you jump to any argument, allow me to lay down the terms: It is a long, wide road with few turns and lovely straights. It's mid-afternoon and the road is rarely used by commuters, as there is a shorter, faster route to get between settlements. The speed limit on the road is the national limit (that's 60mph for those unaware). It is just you on the road, and you can see ahead of you for miles - the road is deserted. For argument's sake we'll say you're doing 100mph on this 60mph road. With only your life in danger if anything goes wrong, is it still irresponsible? If you accept that it is your fault should anything happen to you, are you not entitled to, essentially, "go for it"? Any thoughts?

  • Not on a country road to that level because you can always argue that something could pop out onto the road unexpectedly. Ideally an empty motorway at night seems like a place where, if caught, the Police shouldn't be a dick to you for going too fast.
