Explaining Prom to non-Americans

First off, what is Prom, how does it work? Is it just a school dance, or something more? Second, what does it represent? What is the social structure of Prom? Why is it such a big deal? Third, is it really only in America? We don't have Prom where I live, but in England? Scandinavia?

  • It's just a banquet really, with only the students and teachers, kind of a tribute to the time you had in high school. There's a dance at the end of it, everyone gets done up. It's really just something for everyone to look forward to through high school. It's really exaggerated and done up in movies, commercials, even on the forums. The event isn't anything incredible or different than a wedding reception, with some slight obvious changes.
